Richard Koeller, 73, of Shawano, passed away Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Birch Hill Care Center in Shawano following a lengthy illness. Richard attended St. Paul Lutheran Church, Stony Hill, for many years. Memorial services and burial will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church and Stony Hill Cemetery at 1:30 p.m.

Sept. 29 was the end to our amazing Doris Elst’s life. She brought music into our lives, gracious hospitality and God. She shared with us her many opinions, and had the wonderful gift of humor, which she used every day. Doris was born March 27, 1929, to Edward and Julianna Opperman in Shawano. She married the love of her life, Frank Elst, in 1946.

St. James Lutheran Our fourth- and fifth-graders took their class trip to Madison on Friday, and after school the eighth-graders traveled to Camp Luther for their confirmation retreat. We sent them off with prayers for safe travel and a great experience. We are pleased to report 109 parents were in attendance for our first “Eat With Your Child” meal.

Courtney Baumann earned a trip to the WIAA sectional Wednesday, finishing 17th with a round of 99 at the Division 1 regional at Crystal Springs Golf Course in Seymour. Baumann, a Shawano senior, was the fourth and final individual qualifier, edging out teammate Megan Beck, who finished with a round of 100. Julia Collins, of Wauwatosa, claimed Best of Show in the “Go Green” show at the WOWSpace in Wittenberg with her work titled “Progress.” This is the third award for Collins in WOW shows. She received an Award of Excellence in 2012 for “Arizona,” an oil portrait of a Native American woman potter, and an Award of Honor in 2011 for “Monty and Linda,” a watercolor of two frolicking horses. In the center of “Progress” is a rich green primeval forest.

Shawano Police Department Oct. 1 Police logged 19 incidents, including the following: Obstructing — A charge of obstructing an officer was referred against a 45-year-old Shawano woman. Reckless Driving — Police responded to a reckless driving complaint on state Highway 22. Juvenile — Police logged two truancy complaints from Olga Brener Intermediate School, 1300 S.

Motorists should be keeping an especially keen eye out for deer over the next couple of months as the mating season gets under way, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. The season is at its peak in October and November and deer are more active, particularly at dusk and dawn when they move back and forth between their bedding and feeding areas.
