Ruth L. (Horschler) Ross, 77, of Shawano, passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, in the presence of her family. Born on March 24, 1936, in Joliet, Ill., she was the daughter of the late John and Bertha (Feltz) Horschler. On Sept. 11, 1955, she was united in marriage to Donald Ross. After marriage, Ruth worked as a secretary at Skidmore Pumps in Benton Harbor, Mich. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Saint Joseph, Mich.

It may have been cold outdoors, but the competition was hot for the annual Chile and Chicken Soup contest held Saturday as part of Clintonville’s Winter Whirl celebration. Jim Poppy, 51, of Clintonville, learned at age 8 that he had diabetes, which is hereditary in his family. He injected a shot of insulin each day and altered his diet to control the disease. That is until he was 29 years old. One day after work, as a milk tester, he found his blood pressure had gone “sky high” and his body was swollen. David Michael Duffey passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca. He was born on May 7, 1927, in Green Bay to Henry (Harry) Duffey and Emily (Honey) Dedolph. His mother was a school teacher and raised Dave with his grandparents after Harry died in 1931. Dave grew up in Marion and attended Marion High School, where he played football, basketball and baseball, and graduated in 1945.

The city of Clintonville has purchased approximately 19 acres for the expansion of Commercial Avenue in the city industrial park north of state Highway 156. The city purchased the land from Dennis Fredrick for $285,425, or about $15,000 per acre.

Working in law enforcement, Mike Wizner and Jody Johnson have seen kids in crisis. That is why the husband and wife have been foster parents to 25 children since 2001. “When we first got involved, my sister and her husband adopted two siblings,” Johnson said. “We thought there was such a need. Mother Nature temporarily traded in bitter cold for heavy snow Thursday, with a storm that seemed to clock in and out in sync with daytime office hours. The snow put in a roughly eight-hour day, arriving in time for the morning commute and knocking off shortly before late afternoon rush hour, without any breaks in between.
