Frigid cold increases calls for assistance

Extreme cold coupled with a propane shortage spurred a flood of calls for assistance this week in Shawano County. Deanna L. Grenz, 75, of Tigerton, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at ManorCare in Shawano. The former Deanna Lou Kusnifski was born Dec. 28, 1938, in Tigerton to John and Louise (Berg) Kusnifski. Ann Bruggink
Ann Bruggink, 64, of Oconto Falls, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at King Street Group Home in Oconto Falls. Born on July 14, 1949, in Sheboygan, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Leona (Navis) Bruggink. Ann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Shawano and was an active participant of the Special Olympics.
Robert L. Boettcher
Robert L. Boettcher, 66, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, in Appleton. Born on March 20, 1947, in Shawano, he was the son of the late Lester and Linda (Breitzman) Boettcher. Robert married the former Renee Fredenberg, who preceded him in death on May 21, 2003. Robert was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed working on and fixing things.
Catherine A. Dalum
Catherine A. Dalum, 86, of Shawano, passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, in Shawano. Born on April 19, 1927, in Shawano, she was the daughter and 12th child born at home to the late Elmer and Lela (Meverden) Owen. On Nov. 10, 1945, she was united in marriage to Carl L. Dalum. After marriage the couple owned and operated a dairy farm in Illinois until moving back to Wisconsin in 1960.
Wilma E. Beilfuss
Wilma E. Beilfuss, 88, of Shawano, passed away Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at her home surrounded by her three loving daughters. Born on July 10, 1925, in Shawano, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Aurelia (Strauss) Beyer. On Aug. 28, 1943, she was united in marriage to Harry F. Beilfuss at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. After marriage the couple lived in the Shawano area until moving to Port Washington.
Sally Rae Felckowski
Sally Rae Felckowski, 62, of the town of Washington, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on Oct. 15, 1951, in Shawano, she was the daughter of the late Herbert and Gertrude (Dingeldein) Horn. Sally grew up in the Bonduel area. On Jan. 20, 1973, she was united in marriage to Gary Felckowski in Bonduel.

At 1:35 pm. Jan. 16, a pickup truck and a car driven by men from Gillett collided on Michael Circle at County Road HH in the town of Underhill. The driver of the pickup truck was backing from a driveway and didn’t see a car stopped at a mailbox. No injuries were reported. At 9:40 p.m. Jan. 24, a man from De Pere was driving a pickup truck towing a trailer on Nicolet Road in the town of Townsend.
Open enrollment registration begins Monday
Wisconsin’s public school open enrollment application period runs from Feb. 3 to April 30 for the 2014-15 school year, allowing parents an opportunity to send their children to any public school district in the state. Traditionally, children in Wisconsin are assigned to public school districts based on the location of their parents’ home.
Fairest of the Fair deadline nears
Entry forms are due Feb. 1 for individuals interested in competing for the title of 2014 Oconto County Senior and Junior Fairest of the Fair. The contest will be held March 1 at Oconto Falls High School. Contestants are required to submit an entry form, sponsorship and essay by Feb. 1. For the first time, the Senior and Junior Fairest of the Fair contest will be combined.
