Gillett Elementary School will hold its 4-year-old kindergarten registration on Thursday, Feb. 13, and early childhood screenings on Friday, Feb. 14. During kindergarten registration/screening, children who will be of school age in the fall (4 years old by Sept. 1) are brought to school by their parents. While at school, the children will be involved in a number of activities at various stations.

Tigers lose on last-second shot The Gillett Secondary School boys basketball team lost 41-40 to Marinette and Oconto Conference foe Crivitz on a last-second, 3-point shot Thursday in Gillett. Jake Kasten led Gillett (4-9, 3-5 M&O) with 15 points. Dan Torres added 10. Colton Lange scored 13 points to lead Crivitz (10-3, 702 M&O).

The Oconto Falls High School wrestling team trailed 4-0 after the first match of Thursday’s meet against West De Pere in Oconto Falls. That wouldn’t last. Aided by five West De Pere forfeits, Oconto Falls went on to win 51-13. Oconto Falls recorded two pins: Dewey Krueger (152) over Tad Taggart in 4 minutes, 50 seconds, and Kyle Wolf (195) over Giovanni Lindley in 1:08. Also recording wins for the Panthers were Jacob Stoinski (126) 6-2 over Hunte

Before the Oconto Falls High School boys basketball team could even get its second shot off against Luxemburg-Casco on Friday, the Panthers were already down 15-0. That’s what kind of night it was for OFHS. Luxemburg-Casco hit over 50 percent of its shots, including 12 3-pointers, as Oconto Falls fell 78-43 at home in a Bay Conference game. “I challenged them after the game about playing with heart and pride,” Oconto Falls coach Kirk Hirst said.

The lone Denmark fan who stood in the bleachers until his team scored its first point had to wait a long time. Oconto Falls High School’s girls basketball team scored the opening 17 points of its game Friday night.

Firefighters from five departments battled a barn fire in single-digit temperatures and high wind in the town of Wittenberg on Sunday evening. The blaze at 6180N County Road M was reported just before 5 p.m. No one was reported injured, but several cattle were reported lost. Most of the cattle escaped the fire, according to authorities. Crews were on the scene for more than five hours.

With high temperatures expected to drop below zero early Tuesday, and wind chills reaching -45 below zero, Shawano School District officials on Monday decided to cancel classes on Tuesday. While several districts cancelled classes Monday, Shawano did not. Other school districts canceling classes Tuesday include Bonduel, Bowler, Clintonville, Gillett, Marion, Menominee Indian, Pulaski, Tigerton and Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Extreme cold coupled with a Midwest propane shortage spurred the opening of warming centers and a flood of calls for energy assistance Monday. Shawano County Emergency Management Director Natalie Easterday said the county’s Department of Social Services had been “swamped” with calls seeking assistance. A call to the department’s economic support office was not returned by deadline.
