Michael Thiel Sr.

Michael “Mike” Thiel Sr., 66, of Tigerton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 2, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Michael John Thiel was born on Aug. 12, 1948, in Shawano to Wilbur and Dolores (Malueg) Thiel. His father was career military so the family moved around, but Mike graduated from Tigerton High School in 1966. He entered the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam from November 1967 to July 1969. Meetings explain new farm bill programs
The Shawano-Menominee Farm Service Agency (FSA) and the Shawano County University of Wisconsin-Extension office will hold informational meetings beginning next week on the new commodity programs available under the 2014 farm bill. The Agriculture Risk Coverage (ARC) and the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) programs replace the Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP). The informational meetings will be held at 10 a.m.

Bonduel honors fall athletes
Bonduel High School honored athletes for their accomplishments in the fall sports season with a banquet and awards program Monday at the school. Jen Dowden, the Central Wisconsin Conference-8 player of the year, was named the volleyball team’s Most Valuable Player. She, senior Lexi Reinke and junior Taylor Weier also were honored as the team captains.

Lhotka, Falck compete at state
Bonduel High School senior Sam Falck finished 35th in his final high school cross-country race Saturday at the WIAA State Cross-Country Championships at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. Shawano Community High School junior Austin Lhotka, meanwhile, gained valuable experience for next year, finishing 173rd in the Division 1 race. “It was really fast,” Lhotka said.

Marion sophomore wins state championship
Delaney Greene-Gretzinger didn’t think she could do it. Then she changed her mind. The Marion High School sophomore could feel the pressure of staying in the lead in the last leg of Saturday’s WIAA Division 3 girls state cross-country race. “At the 2-mile, I was thinking I could just let them pass me,” Greene-Gretzinger said. “I just felt like I could change my mind.

Bieber easily wins sheriff race
There will be a new sheriff in town come January after Shawano police officer Adam Bieber validated his August primary win over incumbent Shawano County Sheriff Randy Wright in Tuesday’s election. Bieber faced Independent challenger Lucas Christenson on Tuesday’s ballot, but Wright launched a write-in campaign after the Aug.

‘Fraulein’ earns record profit for museum
The Red Light Saloon closed for the year after a successful one-day run Oct. 4 at the Townsend Town Hall. Capacity crowds enjoyed “The Homesteader’s Fraulein,” written and directed by Kathleen Marsh and narrated by Marcia Wahoske, great-granddaughter of W.A. and Lucy Holt.

Ruth M. Wirkus
Ruth M. Wirkus, 94, Gillett, formerly of Oak Creek, died Saturday morning, Nov. 1, 2014, at the Woodlands of Suring. She was born on June 6, 1920, in Milwaukee County to Fred and Clara (Mischke) Wolter. On May 12, 1945, Ruth married Leonard Wirkus in Milwaukee. The couple lived in the Oak Creek area for most of their married lives until moving to Gillett 10 years ago. Ruth was a member of St. Paul Ev.
