The Shawano Allied Veterans have a number of activities going on next week to remember those who serve in the U.S. armed forces. Two public programs will take place on Veterans Day. Shawano Community Middle School, 1050 S. Union St., Shawano, will host veterans with its annual program at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. Dennis Bohm of AMVETS, who served as a Marine, will be the main speaker.

Shawano police Wednesday were investigating a burglary at the Shawano County Fair office that had apparently occurred late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. The break-in at the fairgrounds, 990 E. Green Bay St., was reported Wednesday at 10:40 a.m.

A multi-agency drug sting on Halloween combined city, county and other area law enforcement agencies with a couple of new recruits in the war on drugs—a pair of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. According to a criminal complaint filed this week, officers costumed as the turtles executed a drug buy from a Shawano man after making contact with him at the Longhorn Saloon, 1181 S.

Shawano School District’s food services provider is trying to develop new ways to get students to eat school meals while keeping within the strict guidelines laid out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The district saw a decrease in the number of lunches served by Taher Inc.

Hard numbers are still being calculated countywide, but there is no question, according to officials, that voter turnout for Tuesday’s midterm election was unusually high. The county also had a high number of new voters who registered Tuesday. William Peter “Bill” Steichen, 85, of Shawano, passed away Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, at Theda Clark in Neenah surrounded by his loving family. Bill was born on Sept. 17, 1929, to the late William R. and Nina L. (Sondergaard) Steichen in Dwight, Illinois. After attending Dwight Township schools and graduating in 1947, he left the family farm to pursue other opportunities. Bill was united in marriage to Doris Kline on Oct. 7, 1950, in Dwight.
