Committee supports site for Clintonville dog park

The Clintonville Park and Recreation Committee voted this week to recommend the Common Council approve plans for creating a dog park on a site near the Clintonville Area Waste Service location off Seventh Street. The committee also suggested a fundraising campaign, with a goal of $18,000, should begin as soon as possible. Music in the Park back for summer
Sunday nights at Memorial Park are getting more lyrical as the city of Shawano’s Music in the Park series kicks off another season this weekend. The KNX Party Band will start off the weekly series of concerts from 6:30-8 p.m. at the park shelter.

Farmers market gearing up for another season
Shawano Farmers Market is gearing up for its second year of operations in its new home at Franklin Park, with new offerings and expectations of more vendors. The market operated for six years in the parking lot at City Hall before moving last summer to the park in the 200 block of South Washington Street. “We like the location,” said Richard Sarnwick, farmers market board president.

End of softball signals start of less active season
Everything that begins seems to also have an ending, and the 2015 softball season for Tigerton High School ended today with a 6-0 loss in the Tigers’ first sectional game. Getting to the sectional was an adventure in itself. Practice begins shortly after the end of the basketball season, in March.

Unexpected appearance
Cows are bred according to their heat cycle. My husband is an excellent herdsman; no brag, just fact. My mother-in-law has told me that when he was a little kid he’d sit on a fence post and just watch the cows. It started way back when! Our herd is well-tended, as my husband observes their cycles and determines which cow to breed, when and with what bull. A cow cycles every three weeks and is usually bred 50-72 days after they’ve freshened.

Boivin, Klister enter Day 2 of state finals
Shawano Community High School senior Daniel Boivin opened competition in the WIAA Division 1 Track and Field State Championships on Friday. The Hawks’ senior qualified in both the 300-meter hurdles and the pole vault, while teammate and fellow senior Jake Klister qualified in the 800. Just one of those three Division 1 events were held on the first day of competition with Boivin (40.45 seconds) 18th during preliminaries for the 300 hurdles.

Gresham’s Payne 5th in triple jump at state
Gresham-Bowler high school senior Drew Payne earned a fifth-place finish in the opening day of the WIAA Division 3 Track and Field State Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday. Payne (42 feet, 10 inches) earned four team points with his finish in the triple jump, which was won by Alex Idonije (44-6.5) of Wayland Academy.

Clintonville senior wins state title in 800
Clintonville High School senior Allison Johnson earned a state title for the Truckers in the WIAA Division 2 State Championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday. Johnson finished the 800-meter run in 2 minutes and 12.72 seconds to finish ahead of Mary Hanson (2:13.23) of Dodgeville/Mineral Point.
