Marie E. Frank, 93, of Gillett, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2016. Marie was born on July 11, 1922, in the town of Underhill to the late Paul and Helena (Wilke) Dicke. After graduating from Gillett High School she was employed by the telephone company in Milwaukee. On Dec. 26, 1945, Marie was united in marriage to George Frank in Milwaukee and moved to his family dairy farm in the town of Underhill, where they farmed until 1977.

LuAnn Newton, 68, of St. Germain, passed away at Rennes Health Care in Rhinelander on Jan. 20, 2016, after a brief illness. LuAnn was born in Oconto Falls on Oct. 25, 1947, to Joe and Sally Vanden Bush. She graduated from Green Bay West High School. LuAnn loved volunteering for Angel on My Shoulder, a cancer support organization in St. Germain where she prepared gift bags to deliver to cancer patients at hospitals throughout the state.

Five singers from Oconto Falls High School were selected to perform in the All-State Honors Choir organized by the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association. The students were recommended by their high school choral director, Amy Thiel, and selected based on their outstanding musicianship and character. The All-State Women’s Choir was conducted by Beth Holmes, of Milliken University.

Gillett Middle School students in grades five through eight participated in the local Scripps spelling bee. The top three spellers from each grade participated in the districtwide spelling bee Thursday in the Meunier/Pelow Auditorium. The top two spellers were sixth-grader Aidan Patza and fifth-grader Dylan Block. Patza will represent Gillett at the CESA 8 regional bee on Feb.

The Lena High School girls volleyball team, Coach Heidi Place and some of the girls’ parents prepared and served a brunch for residents on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Ronald McDonald House in Wauwatosa. It was their way to help residents at the facility related to children being treated at Children’s Hospital and nearby hospitals. The volunteers wore their “I’m on Kyle’s Team” shirts and served the brunch in the memory of Kyle Hodkiewicz, of Lena.

Kenneth Edward Seefeldt, 87, of Cecil, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, in Shawano. Kenneth was born in the town of Grover on Sept. 24, 1928, to the late Edward and Olga (Rohde) Seefeldt. He served our country during the Korean War from 1951 until 1953 as an airplane mechanic. He earned a Korean Service Medal and a Bronze Star. Ken started his own poultry business in the 1950s in Peshtigo.

Leah Lynn Besaw, age 50, of Neopit, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016. She was born in Shawano on April 30, 1965, the daughter of Eldora Theresa (Beauprey) Besaw and the late Glenn Joseph Besaw. Leah loved the outdoors, spending time in the woods camping, hunting, cutting fire wood, picking berries, fishing or just being at home on the Rez. Leah had a generous heart, always there to help out, doing so wholeheartedly.

Marian E. Nicholaus, 83, of Shawano, passed away Friday afternoon, Jan. 22, 2016, in Shawano. Marian was born on May 28, 1932, in the town of Richmond, a daughter of the late Ervin and Grace (Knowles) Froelich. She was a 1949 graduate of Shawano High School. On Aug. 16, 1952, she was united in marriage to Maynard “Shorty” Nicholaus at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano. Shorty preceded her in death on Sept.
