To the editor: Our city has been fortunate to have had dedicated leaders who have served to make our city and community better for the majority of the people. We now look forward to another election where we the people can choose those who will lead. Even in a smaller community, our choices are important.

To the editor: Local people with emergency needs for medicine, fuel, utilities or food will be thankful this year for the generosity of their neighbors. The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign, to which many of your readers contributed, has resupplied the funds that will be needed. Some of these readers gave their pocket change each time they passed the kettle. Others pulled cash from their wallets a few times during the season.

This El Niño winter has been unusual, to say the least. Our warmer than normal fall and December spoiled us, and then January happened. We got our snow, and eventually the below zero weather. I heard complaints, but I didn’t agree. Even the below zero days didn’t compare to other winters. Sure, I don’t enjoy needing to bundle up with winter coats, mittens and caps, but, when it is windy and cold, it sure helps when I do.

For some people, January is just a month to simply tolerate in the middle of a long winter. I’ve always rather liked January, for a number of reasons. For instance, watching the Packers in the postseason … ah, but that is another article. When I start to feel better. Which might take a while. Again. The Cardinal game? From kick off to coin toss to abrupt end to our up-and-down season … goodness! All-in-all, it was a really good ride.

Connie Sommer volunteers at SAM’s House, a shelter for the homeless in Shawano. She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but grew up in Appleton, graduating from high school there. She worked at AAL, now Thrivent, in Appleton for a year, then part time at JC Penney and the Community Blood Center. Connie and her husband, Harland, were married for 50 years before his death in 2002. They have four children, 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
