Despite wet conditions, corn plantings at 78%

Heavy rains reduced Wisconsin to just 2.5 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending May 26, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service. The warmer weather was beneficial to crop development and hay growth. When able, the week’s field activities included, tillage, planting crops and cutting hay. Topsoil moisture condition rated zero percent very short, 4% short, 61% adequate and 35% surplus.

Seniors can get help for farmers market purchases
Shawano County residents 60 and older (or Native Americans 55 and older) who meet income requirements are eligible for financial help to purchase items at local farmers markets. The Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program offers these seniors the opportunity to buy fruits, vegetable and herbs from certified farmers. Milwaukee School of Engineering Vincent Vassallo, from Gillett, was named to the Milwaukee School of Engineering’s honors list for the 2024 spring semester. Vassallo is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in computer engineering. Ira Rudesill, from Tigerton, was named to the dean’s list for the 2024 spring semester.

The earth lost a kind and beautiful soul. Jan Louise (Turner) Atkinson died peacefully at her home on May 26, 2024, in Wittenberg, at the age of 72. A beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, mother-in-law and friend, Jan’s life was filled with many happy moments with the people she loved.

Bonduel golfers win sectional title
May 28 Division 3 Wabeno/Laona Sectional Bonduel’s golfers won the sectional championship and Lena placed second as both teams advanced to the state tournament following their top play at McCauslin Brook Golf Course in Lakewood. The Bears scored 313, and the Wildcats scored 317. Gillett scored a 409 and finished in 12th place out of 12 teams. For Bonduel, Colin Margelofsky and Jake Dreyer each scored 77.

Pulaski soccer team wins regional game
May 28 Pulaski 3, Hortonville 0 In the first round of regional action, Pulaski defeated Hortonville 3-0. The Red Raiders scored twice in the first half and once more in the second half. The No. 3 seed Red Raiders will host No. 7 seed Watertown at 1 p.m. June 1.

Chargers’ softball season ends at sectionals
Wittenberg-Birnamwood’s softball team came to a disappointing end May 28 with a 7-6 loss to Peshtigo in the first round of WIAA sectional action. The Chargers end their season at 9-5 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-East Conference and 16-11 overall. Rory Salvesen led the team in hitting this season, batting .466.
