After serving their food from a food truck since 2016, Jeremy Weed and Amber Arneson are now working out of a permanent home at 136 S.

After being open less than a year, Thrifty Books at 732 E. Green Bay St. (in the Fairview Plaza) has closed its doors. Nathan and Wendy Powell opened the used bookstore Sept. 7, 2023. The business’s last day was May 18. The couple announced on social media April 26 that the store would close July 1 but ended up closing six weeks early.

The Store convenience stores and gas stations are set to close following the declaration of bankruptcy by Mountain Express Oil Co., the company that owns its buildings and land. This includes the convenience stores at 404 E. Green Bay St., Shawano, and 100 S.

Summer hours are in effect at the Shawano County Courthouse. Hours of operation are now 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7-11 a.m. Friday. Noah Weier and Devon Bostwick matched scoreless innings through three innings, and then Bostwick left with an injury.

Gwen Holtz, 90, Oconto Falls, died Tuesday morning, May 28, 2024, at The Cottages at Meadowlands. She was the only child born July 10, 1933, in Denmark, Wisconsin, to George and Lulu (Anderson) Andersen. As a young girl, she moved with her parents to Oconto Falls where they ran a Red Owl grocery store. On May 15, 1954, she married Walter “Bud” Holtz at Grace Lutheran Church in Oconto Falls.

Wittenberg Community Days will expand to three days this year, June 7-9, at Washington Park, 104 Park St. “The owners of Tri-State Amusements have been great to work with. They want to help make sure we are successful, and they want to grow this event together,” said Angie Heling-Johnson, president of the Wittenberg Area Chamber of Commerce.

Wisconsin egg production during April was 205 million eggs, down 1% from the previous year, according to the latest Chickens and Eggs report from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. The average number of all layers on hand during April 2024 was 8.13 million, up 1% from last year.

There were 37,000 workers hired directly by farms in the Lake Region (Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin) during the reference week of Jan. 7-13, according to the latest U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Statistics Service Farm Labor report. Farm operators paid their hired workers an average wage rate of $19.90 per hour, $1.05 above January 2023.
