Dollars for Scholars endowment at $11M

Shawano Dollars for Scholars celebrated two records Friday at its annual gala held at The Gathering in Shawano. The group’s endowment fund has increased to $11 million, thanks primarily to a $7.5 million donation from the Judge Michael and Joanne Eberlein estate announced at the 2011 gala, and the organization will provide a record $435,000 in scholarships, up from $410,000 last year. “This year we have for scholarships a total of $435,000, which

Spring brings thoughts of country school
Now that Easter is past, and the calendars are about to turn to May, I see the grass is beginning to spring up in yards and fields. Those rainy days that I am not fond of are helping the process of greening things up. Some of the trees have begun to bud out, and soon the leaves will spring forth. This time of year is pure joy to watch the different hues of green as I travel throughout the countryside.

Spring activities abound
The fields are sitting dormant just now, but soon plow, disk and drag will turn the supple, rich soil and the planting season will begin. I try not to think too far ahead because I tend to get overwhelmed with the amount of work waiting for us. One day at a time, Lord!

Tigerton Fire Department volunteers not only fight fires, but also keep the equipment in fine condition and continue their training throughout the year. Each volunteer has to have 120 hours of training. “That’s the least they can do to be a fireman,” said Jack Mauritz, who has been the fire chief for five years.

Lee, Linda, Bethany and Mary Kreklow like to volunteer and this year got involved in a project started by 10-year-old Mary — making quilts and blankets for Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. The family lives in Tigerton, where Lee has his own business. Linda is a kindergarten teacher at Tigerton Elementary School. They have been married 23 years.

Shawano Auto Sales among Chrysler dealer elite
Longtime family-owned business Shawano Auto Sales recently was named one of 56 winners nationwide of the Chrysler Elite Dealer Award for outstanding customer service for 2013. The late Earl Roloff, who opened the business in 1957 and handed over the operations to his children in 2008, received multiple awards during his tenure as owner.

Missing elderly man found deceased
A 90-year-old Antigo man reported missing Thursday night was found deceased on a wooded trail Friday morning after an extensive search, according to the Shawano County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities have not yet released the man’s name. The Sheriff’s Department was notified about 10 p.m.

Sturgeon run will heat up along with temperatures
Sturgeon could be spawning by the Shawano dam on the Wolf River by the end of the weekend — if water temperatures continue to rise. The annual visit by the sturgeon is later than usual this year, but lovers of the large prehistoric fish might want to clear some time from their schedules next week.
