A painted piece of plywood hanging on an Abrams barn and the people who put it there will gain national attention this fall. The 15th quilt of the Barn Quilts of Oconto County project, hung at 2612 Cross Road, Abrams, will be featured in Country magazine’s October/November issue.

A BMX bike was reported stolen June 27 from a bike rack at Washington Middle School, 102 S. Washington St. A BMX bike was located in the Oconto Falls Pond by a man who snagged it while fishing June 27 . The bike was in good condition, but it was not the bike reported missing. Officers investigated a fireworks complaint on Cherry Avenue on June 29. A garage window was reported broken July 1 on South Oakland Avenue.

A rash of vandalism at city parks has the Oconto Falls City Council ready to install security cameras to catch those who damage city property and deter others from trying. The council on July 8 directed City Administrator Vicki Roberts to pull together quotes for a security system for the city’s parks. The quotes are scheduled to be reviewed by the council Aug.

Believing the city was pricing itself out of the market for serving papers, Oconto Falls has reduced its fee by $19. Effective July 8, district attorney offices, lawyers and other agencies can contract with the Oconto Falls Police Department to serve court papers for a fee of $25, down from $44 previously. Police Sgt. Corey Rank told the City Council on July 8 the city earned $680 for the service in 2012 but only $300 in 2013.

The Suring Village Board on July 8 approved spending $17,600 for engineering services for a sewer project. Consultants will prepare the specifications and drawings to be used to bid the project, prepare bidding documents, review and approve contractor forms, and assist with inspections and start-up for monitoring the system. In May, the board approved a $53,000 pH control project, as required by the Department of Natural Resources.

The cleanup of mercury contamination at the waste water facility will cost Oconto Falls residents over a million dollars. Crews working on the renovation and expansion of the facility in 2013 discovered mercury in the trickling filters, which remove organic material from waste water.
