Validity of election questioned

While reviewing the Rules of the County Board on Thursday, county supervisors revisited the April 15 election of Lee Rymer as chairperson and Paul Bednarik as vice chairperson. According to County Board rules, the chairman and vice chairman are elected in a secret written ballot — the only election in which a secret ballot is allowed. Del Monte announces plant closures
A week after Del Monte Foods acquired Sager Creek’s Oconto Falls operations, the company announced it would close the facility and a canning plant in Pulaski, laying off 14 workers in Oconto Falls and affecting more than 200 jobs overall. Del Monte acquired Sager Creek Vegetable Co.

Shirley Mae Marquardt
Shirley Mae Marquardt, 82, Green Bay, formerly Oconto Falls, died Saturday evening, March 21, 2015, at a Green Bay hospital. She was born Feb. 3, 1933, in Marinette to Jess and Hazel (Lynch) Faucett. As a teenager, Shirley moved with her family to Oconto County, where she attended Oconto Falls High School. On April 10, 1950, she married Neil Marquardt in Oconto Falls.

Townsend church announces Holy Week schedule
St. John Lutheran Church, Townsend, invites the community to its Holy Week services. Palm Sunday Services are scheduled at 5:30 p.m March 28 and 9 a.m. March 29, with the theme “Receive Love” and the parable of the lost sheep (Luke 15:7). Each person will receive a blessed palm to take home. Maundy Thursday will be celebrated at 7 p.m. April 2 with Holy Communion.

Abrams troupe to present ‘Nunsense’
Abrams Spotlight Productions Inc. will present “Nunsense” in seven performances at The Byng Community Theater in Abrams. “Nunsense,” with book, music and lyrics by Dan Goggin, begins when the Little Sisters of Hoboken discover their cook has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters. In dire need of funds for the burials, the sisters decide to raise the money by putting on a variety show. The sisters take over Mount St.

Registration open for 4-H summer camp
Youth who have completed grades three through six are invited to attend summer camp at Camp Bird, located near Crivitz in Marinette County. The University of Wisconsin-Extension summer camp for Oconto and Marinette counties will take place Saturday, June 13, to Tuesday, June 16. Campers will participate in a variety of activities, including swimming, arts and crafts, recreation, nature and campfire.

A Slice of Suring
Editor’s note: This is the third in a series focusing on the artists of the Suring area, in honor of Suring’s centennial celebration. Rick Zill’s specialty is woodworking. His father was a woodworker, too. Zill said his love of working with wood started at an early age while watching his father. After high school, he moved to Milwaukee to work and, at age 25, began in earnest to create with wood.

Imig, Meyer to attend Badger Boys State
The Doney-DeGrave American Legion Post 342 will sponsor Keegan Imig’s weeklong session at Badger Boys State in June. Imig, son of Chuck and Kerri Imig, is a junior at Lena High School. He is the treasurer of the Class of 2016 and a member of the National Honor Society, Hi-Q team and the L-Club.
