Carol K. Smith, 60, of Eau Claire, died on Wednesday, March 18, 2015, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Eau Claire surrounded by her family after losing her battle with cancer. She was born on Feb. 21, 1955, to the late Carl R. and Mavis (Huth) Dey in Shawano. After graduating from high school, Carol attended and received her degree in psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

George A. Warrington Sr., 67, passed away Monday, March 2, 2015, after a short illness, surrounded by his loving family. George was born on Aug. 8, 1947, in Chicago to Kenneth and Lillian Warrington. George is survived by his wife, Wanda; three children, Richard (Arienna), George Jr., Tara; and two grandchildren, Carolina Mangru and Brittany Kimlole Warrington.

Del Monte Foods is closing food processing plants in Pulaski and Oconto Falls soon after acquiring the company that owned them. WLUK-TV reported Friday that 40 full-time jobs will be lost, along with 200 seasonal positions. The plants process and store corn, green beans and peas.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department filled two vacant posts Thursday, the same day a detective’s sudden resignation created another. Greg Trinko, a patrol sergeant with the department, was named jail administrator, effective April 13. The position has been vacant since mid-January when Steve Borroughs suddenly resigned. Shawano Police Officer Kurt Kitzman was named patrol lieutenant.

The boys high school basketball season is over at Gresham, but the awards continue to mount for senior guard Christian Haffner. Haffner, who was recently named Central Wisconsin Conference-10 Player of the Year, was a unanimous choice for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association’s Division 5 all-state team. Haffner averaged 26.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game for the Wildcats, who finished the season 21-4, including a 15-3 mark
