School district hopes for willing write-in candidate

School district officials are hoping for a write-in willing to fill the Shawano School Board seat representing the town of Herman in the April 7 election. Incumbent Jay Jones decided not to run for another two-year term, and no candidates came forward to take his seat. Middle strength keys Hawks softball prospects

Population down in 35 Wisconsin counties
New census figures show the population fell in nearly half of Wisconsin’s 72 counties. The population estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau show 35 counties lost people from 2013 to 2014. It continues a trend of dropping populations in rural counties that’s due mainly to residents moving out. Menominee County, one of the counties with population growth, showed the fastest growth rate — 3.2 percent — from 2013 to 2014.

Michael Wayne Buettner
Michael “Mike” Buettner, a native and longtime resident of northern Wisconsin, lost his three-year courageous battle with ALS on March 20, 2015. He was born in Shawano on Sept. 27, 1960, son of Wayne and Sandra (Brunner) Buettner, of Gresham. Michael graduated from Antigo High School in 1979. He earned his bachelor’s degree in fisheries biology and his master’s degree in natural resources from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Arnold Henry “Nookie” Thomas, 87, of Shawano, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 22, 2015, at his home. Arnold was born March 24, 1927, in Shawano, a son of the late Herman and Hattie (Meisner) Thomas. He attended the Shawano schools, graduating from high school in 1946. Beatrice J. Naumann
Beatrice June (Lawrenz) Naumann, 83, of Cecil, was called home Friday, March 20, 2015, in Shawano. She was born April 28, 1931, to the late William (Mike) and Erna (Bankert) Lawrenz in the town of Washington. On Oct. 20, 1951, Beatrice was married to Joe Naumann at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cecil. Besides being a homemaker, Beatrice helped her husband on the farm in the town of Green Valley.

Firefighters called to area grass fires
Authorities responded to four fire calls Sunday, just a few days after the state Department of Natural Resources warned of an increased fire threat because of dry conditions. A grass fire on Larsen Road in Green Valley started just before noon and spread to a nearby barn, while another grass fire a short time later on County Road C in Angelica also burned an abandoned warehouse, according to authorities. Statewide tornado drill planned April 16
Wisconsin will hold its annual Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week from April 13-17. The theme — “Listen, act and live!” — emphasizes the importance of listening to warnings and seeking shelter immediately to save lives. Wisconsin averages 23 tornadoes annually, according to the National Weather Service, which is planning a statewide tornado drill April 16. The weather service will issue a statewide mock tornado watch at 1 p.m.
