Witt-Birn girls finish 6th at state meet

Freshman Maddy Pietz led the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls track and field team to a sixth-place finish in the two-day WIAA Division 2 state championships that concluded Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Pietz’s two runner-up finishes accounted for 16 of the Chargers’ 24 points. Dodgeville/Mineral Point won the meet with 36 points. After running the 100-meter dash in 12.56 seconds in the preliminary round Friday, Pietz finished second in the final at 12.8. Mount Horeb’s Nadia Williams (12.71) won the event. Pietz (25.99) finished behind Williams (25.85) in the 200 final as well. Pietz also ran a leg on the 1,600 relay team, which finished second in 4:03.29 to close the scoring for the Chargers. She was joined by Emily Norrbom, Mikayla King and Paige Norrbom. Dodgeville/Mineral Point won the event in 4:00.61.
