Marie M. Gluth, 89, of Clintonville, passed away Monday morning, March 30, 2015, at Pine Manor Healthcare Center in Embarrass. Marie was born on Nov. 22, 1925, in the Township of Bear Creek, Waupaca County, as the daughter of the late John and Mabel (Burton) Stilen. On June 19, 1948, she was united in marriage to Paul A. Gluth at St. Martin Lutheran Church in Clintonville. The couple resided in Clintonville their entire married life.

Our sister, Marie Constance Hagen, joined our loved ones in Heaven on Sunday, March 29, 2015. She was born in Shawano on Christmas Day 1958 to Bertrand and Helen (Nelessen) Hagen. Marie lived a long life with the challenges of Downs Syndrome. For 27 years, Marie was under the tender loving care of Dorothy and Edward Hahn, of Waupaca. Dorothy is truly an angel sent by God to do His most loving work.

Imogene May Toellner, 81, of Bonduel, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015, in Green Bay. Imogene was born to the late Arthur S. and Evelyn (James) Naparalla on May 23, 1933, in Shawano County, the oldest of five children. She was united in marriage to Leonard J. Toellner on Oct. 18, 1952, in Bonduel.

Sandra M. “Sandy” Ponfil, 75, of Neopit, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015. Sandy was born in Keshena on Oct. 5, 1939, to the late Robert D. and Mary (Neconish) Soman. After attending Antigo High School, Sandra moved to Chicago, where she lived until returning to the Menominee area. She was a generous, kind-hearted, fun-loving person with a great sense of humor.

Karelyn Malliet’s third trip to the Badger State Spelling Bee ended with a top-five finish Saturday but not a trip to the national bee. Malliet, an eighth-grade student at Shawano Community Middle School, competed with 47 other students Saturday in Madison and finished in a tie for fourth place, narrowly missing her second straight trip to the E.W.

The heirs to the original Shawano Medical Center property will get both a park and a cash settlement under an agreement approved this week by the Shawano Common Council. The deal puts an end to months of negotiations and opens the way for development of the property after the hospital relocates this fall to a new site adjacent to ThedaCare Physicians on County Road B. Some Shawano School District employees received preliminary layoff notices last week, but it is uncertain whether those staff members will be cut when the School Board makes a final decision May 4. The board emerged from closed session on March 23 and agreed to issue the notices.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate. Tears and smiles were all part of the 2015 Shawano-Menominee American Cancer Society Relay for Life at the Shawano Community High School gym Saturday.

Bowler High School The Bowler School District forensics team qualified for state competition to be held in Madison. Team members took part in the district level competition Saturday in Marinette. Team members qualified by earning a score of 20 or above out of 25 from at least two out of three performances in their areas of focus. Juniors at Bowler High School participated in the school’s first mock interviews/soft skills panel Feb.
