The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds Wisconsinites of the protected tribal right to fish in certain Wisconsin waterways and the legal consequences they could face if found interfering with that right during the upcoming Ojibwe spring fishing season. “The Wisconsin DNR fully supports Ojibwe sovereignty and treaty rights,” said DNR Deputy Secretary Steven Little.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is accepting artwork entries for the wild turkey, pheasant and waterfowl stamp design contests. The winning designs will appear on the 2025 collection of stamps. Sales of these three stamps bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for species management throughout the state — including habitat management, restoration, education and research projects.

Harold Lewis, 94, Oconto Falls, died Thursday evening, March 7, 2024, at a Green Bay hospital. He was born Nov. 6, 1929, in Oconto, to Edward and Violet (Clark) Lewis. Harold married Charlotte Ruth Andre on July 31, 1959. They had six children together and enjoyed nearly 65 beautiful years together. Early on, Harold and Charlotte lived in Milwaukee, where he worked as a prison guard for Milwaukee County.

Mavis G. Steffen, 92, of Gillett, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024. Mavis was born on Oct. 23, 1931, to the late Raymond and Gertrude (Strupp) Perschbacher in Advance.

Tom Borko, 62, Stiles, died early Monday morning, March 11, 2024, following a 24-year illness with COPD. He was born May 17, 1961, in Manistique, Michigan, to Steven and Mary Ann (New) Borko. Tom grew up in Manistique where he graduated high school. He went on to serve in the U.S. Air Force for eight years. On March 11, 2004, he married Linda Dantinne in Oconto.

Attorneys in the case of the woman who shot an Oconto Falls police officer finished some wrangling over motions March 7, setting the stage for the mental health portion of her trial to begin April 1. Alisha Kocken, 31, of Oconto Falls, is charged in Oconto County Circuit Court with attempted first-degree intentional homicide, resisting an officer with a result of great bodily harm, battery or threat to a law officer and disarming a peace officer,

Criminal charges have been brought against an Oconto man in connection with a crash last summer that killed a woman who was riding with him on his motorcycle. A criminal complaint was filed Feb.

Bond was set at $100,000 cash after a Town of Gillett man was charged with the Feb.
