Residents warned of blacktop scam
The Shawano County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents about a blacktopping scam that is making its way around the county. Officials were notified of the scam when individuals approached a homeowner about having “leftover” blacktop and attempting to get them to buy a load to pave their driveway. Survey to look at drug, alcohol impact on county
The Oconto County Substance Use Alliance for Change has announce the launch of a comprehensive community survey to understand the impact of drugs and alcohol in Oconto County by gathering insights directly from community members. This initiative seeks to gather information about individuals’ experiences, perceptions, and behaviors related to drug and alcohol use.
Democrats hosting transgender speaker for Pride Month
The Democratic Party of Shawano County will have a speaker, Jamie Shiner, on June 19 at 7 p.m. at the Shawano Civic Center, 225 S. Main St., Shawano. Shiner will share her experiences as a transgender person as part of an observance of Pride Month, which is a month recognizing lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender people and people who identify as queer.
Krizan talking with public on school issues
Parents and community members spent about an hour June 4 talking with Shawano School District Superintendent Kurt Krizan about the good and the bad things regarding the public schools and what their thoughts are about making things better. It was the first of four summer superintendent chats planned by the district where Krizan plans to get input on what can be done to ensure students are getting a good education.
LaRock’s new trial for attempted homicide Aug. 12
Royce LaRock’s new trial date will be Aug. 12 as he faces a charge of attempted homicide and other charges relating to an April 2023 crime. During a status conference June 5, it was confirmed that the date, set in early March, would work as planned. A final pre-trial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 6. “The trial date in August is the second trial date we’ve had,” said Carly Krueger, LaRock’s attorney.

Bonduel finishes fourth, Lena is fifth at state golf meet
Bonduel dropped from second place to fourth after the second day of play at the WIAA Division 3 state championship at Blackwolf Run in Kohler. Lena remained in fifth place June 3 and again June 4. Mineral Point was the eventual champion, with scores of 156 the first day and 327 the second day for a total of 483.
