Kickoff meeting starts new Relay for Life

The 2025 American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Shawano-Menominee kickoff meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 27 in the lower level of the Shawano County Library, 128 S. Sawyer St., Shawano. Attendees can learn more about the Shawano-Menominee Relay For Life, how they can get involved and what’s new for 2025. Registration for the event will be open, and the 2025 theme will be revealed. Team captains, team members and participants are welcome.

Free of injuries but not the law
A 40-year-old Clintonville man escaped injury after his van broke through the ice on Shawano Lake the morning of Jan. 7. However, he didn't escape justice, as he was later taken to the county jail on bail jumping and other charges, officials said. Shawano County dispatchers received a call at 6:32 a.m. about the vehicle in the water near Stark and Washington Lake roads.

Wausaukee woman dies in SUV crash
A Wausaukee woman was killed Jan. 4 in a one-vehicle crash in the Town of Stiles. According to a news release from Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban, the Emergency Dispatch Center was notified of the crash involving a sport utility vehicle with injuries on U.S. Highway 141 at Stiles Road. The preliminary investigation revealed the woman, 24, was driving north on U.S. Highway 141 with a 1-year-old girl.

Packers need wake-up call before playoffs
After starting the season winning 11 out of its first 15 games, the Green Bay Packers have lost the last two games to division rivals Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears, entering the playoffs on a two-game losing streak. Going 1-5 in the NFC North this season, Green Bay did not really come away with a signature victory over a competitive opponent this season.

CMN president awarded Ph.D. from the UW-Madison
College of Menominee Nation (CMN) President Christopher M. Caldwell has earned his doctorate in environment and resources through the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at UW-Madison. Caldwell’s dissertation, titled “Indigenous Sustainability Thinking: A Menominee Perspective,” focused on Indigenous approaches to research, language revitalization and sustainability.
