Jeanne K. Kastner

Jeanne Kathryn Kastner, 74, of Red Wing, Minn., died at her home at Deer Crest on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013. She was born Sept. 27, 1939, in Shawano, the daughter of Elmer and Beatrice (Wilt) Rades. She graduated from Shawano High School in 1957 and moved to Milwaukee, where she worked for Northwestern Mutual Life. She married Robert Kastner in 1962. They lived in Milwaukee before moving to Sheboygan in 1966 and to Burnsville, Minn., in 1975.

What is American Indian literature?
A lecture Tuesday wrapping up the College of Menominee Nation’s 2013 lecture series inquired about what constitutes American Indian literature, but attendees left without a definitive answer. For Ryan Winn, a humanities and theater professor at CMN, that is just fine with him, because he isn’t sure there are solid boundaries for the literature subset. “It’s almost an impossible topic to put in one hour,” Winn said.

Martell leads Hawks at state swim meet
Clare Martell fell just a few tenths of a second from her goal at the WIAA Division 1 state swimming championships Saturday in Madison. The Bonduel sophomore finished the 100-yard breaststroke in 1 minute, 6.29 seconds, taking seventh in the event, just one spot from the podium. “She swam a great race,” Shawano/Bonduel coach Sharon Hanson said. “Her time was very close to what she had at sectionals.

Bears open boys basketball season with win
New Bonduel High School boys basketball coach Duke Copp got off on the right foot Tuesday, helping his team win its season opener in Gillett 46-33. With a young team, Copp wasn’t sure what to expect. “It was exciting,” Copp said. “It was a battle.” Junior Connor Rosin led the Bears’ attack by hitting four baskets from beyond the 3-point arc for 12 points.

Oconto County releases health improvement plan
A five-year community health improvement plan targets nutrition and physical activity, alcohol and other drugs, and mental health as top health improvement priorities. Healthy Oconto County 2018 is an ongoing initiative led by Bellin Health Oconto Hospital, Community Memorial Hospital and Oconto County Public Health.

Machickanee Players announce 31st season
The Machickanee Players will present comedy, drama and suspense in their 31st season of community theater. The season opens with Charlotte Hastings’ “High Ground.” This drama, a thrilling tale of coincidence, will be presented Feb. 7, 8, 9, 14, 15 and 16. On a stormy night, the waters are high and the fear of the dam breaking brings the town together at the chapel on the highest hill. Little do they know a killer is among them.

CMS wins partnership award
Custom Metal Specialists Inc. of Oconto Falls was recently recognized by the NEW Manufacturing Alliance at the Excellence in Manufacturing/K-12 Partnership Award ceremony at the KI Convention Center in Green Bay. The firm was singled out for this year’s Educational Partnership award. Oconto Falls High School tech ed teacher Tom Karban nominated the company.

Oconto County Sheriff’s Department
At 2:30 a.m. Nov. 9, a car driven by an Oconto Falls man lost control traveling on Sunshine Road north of County Road A in the town of Lena. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree. Severe damage was reported to the vehicle. The driver was not injured. At 6 a.m. Nov. 16, a pickup truck driven by a man from Green Bay left Diamond Roof Road in Townsend, entered a ditch and struck several trees. He was not injured.

Oconto County Circuit Court
Proceedings from Nov. 13 Yvahn L. Shaw, 26, Oconto, made an initial appearance on charges of negligent handling of a weapon and disorderly conduct, both classified as hate crimes. She was arrested Nov. 12 in Oconto, after threatening another with a knife. Her bond was set at $200 cash, and her appearance is continued to Dec. 5. Dylan J.

Chamber gets council OK for welcome signs
The Oconto Falls Chamber of Commerce has gained City Council approval for two new welcome signs. At the City Council meeting Nov. 12, Chamber of Commerce President Gail Yatso presented three options for one of the signs.
