Area families, teens, seniors and organizations have all answered the call to volunteer at these libraries.

Raquel Strayer volunteers for a number of organizations. She was born in Milwaukee but moved to Puerto Rico, where her mother was from, when her parents divorced. She graduated from Commonwealth High School in Puerto Rico in 1975 and came back to Wisconsin to attend the University of Wisconsin-Fond du Lac. Strayer then moved to the Gresham area and began working for Midwest Breeders (now CRI) in 1976.

Now that the calendar is about to turn to the month of June, and the weather has seemed to catch up to the actual season, it feels like summer has arrived. With one of my granddaughters playing softball for Tigerton High School, I went through a whole series of weather going to games during the past two months. There was rain, quite often wind, and only the last two were warm with no jacket required.

Since all our planting is now complete, the disk, drag and chisel plow have been tucked into the back corner of the shed along with the corn planter and grain drill. All are stored until next year. I am off the hook as far as field work goes. Until we start haying, that is. This recent nice warm rain we got Memorial Day evening along with the warmer temps will shoot the alfalfa up lush and thick in no time.

Some of the men on the Senior Softball Team in Shawano have been playing since 2001. “It seems like it was yesterday,” said Don Meyer, one of the original organizers. Bill Schmidt, who now lives in Green Bay, started the team in Shawano after he played in Arizona. Other original players still participating are Bob Kurkiewicz, Don Raddant and Henry Schultz. After putting an article in the paper, six guys showed up for the first practice.

He was fast becoming a local celebrity over the course of his three-day visit, but by Friday he had apparently overstayed his welcome. The yearling bear that had been alternately raiding bird feeders and getting chased into trees to have his picture taken since his arrival in Shawano on Wednesday morning was forcibly evicted by authorities shortly after 1 p.m.

It’s that time of year again when motorists need to be aware of increased chances of running into deer on the roadways. Shawano County is one of the places in Wisconsin where that is most likely to happen, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Law enforcement agencies reported 18,313 deer vs. motor vehicle crashes in the state last year. Waukesha County had the most motor vehicle vs. deer crashes in 2013 with 809.

Week 3 of racing at the historic half mile Shawano Speedway turned out to be a night to remember for hometown hot shoe Cody Hudson. The popular driver known as “The Hudson Hornet” is a rookie this season in the IMCA Modified division after winning the track championship a season ago in the IMCA Sport Mod class. I’ve told his story before in these pages, but it is worth retelling.
