SCHS honors spring athletes

Seniors Cody Urban and Kia Smurawa received Athlete of the Year awards at the Shawano Athletic Booster Club’s annual spring banquet Monday at The Gathering in Shawano. Exhibit features work of paralyzed artist
An open house reception for artist Steve Champine, of Howard, will be held from 1-4 p.m. June 14 at the Mielke Arts Center, N5649 Airport Road, Shawano. Several of Champine’s watercolor paintings will be on exhibit in the lobby gallery through the annual art fair July 27 at the park. Champine is paralyzed from his shoulders down.

Bears can't overcome 3 home runs
Three home runs, including a pair by Shiocton senior Talon Heinemeyer, were too much for the Bonduel High School baseball team to overcome in a 6-3 loss Wednesday in Bonduel. The defeat in the WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal ended the Bears’ season and the high school careers of eight seniors. Heinemeyer set the tone early, with a first-inning, two-run shot over the right field fence.

Gresham golfers miss state bid Gresham’s Killian Eggert shot a 90 at the WIAA Division 3 golf sectional at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Hortonville on Wednesday, finishing 15th and six strokes off the state qualifying mark of 84. Kyle Miller finished with a 93 for Gresham. Cole Hoffman shot a 110, James Kazik 119 and Chase Denomie 144. As a team, Gresham finished ninth with a team score of 412.

SCHS golfer qualifies for state tournament
The third try at sectionals was a charm for golfer Braden Mueller. The Shawano Community High School junior came in third with a round of 76 Wednesday at the WIAA Division 1 sectional at Thornberry Creek at Oneida. The score was good enough to earn Mueller a berth in next week’s state tournament. “He was just playing fantastic,” Shawano coach Dean Kugler said. “I mean, wow!

Shawano might welcome chickens soon
Shawano residents hungry for a steady supply of fresh eggs from their own backyard chickens moved a step closer to their dream coming true Wednesday. The Plan Commission recommended a new city ordinance that would allow the birds to be kept within city limits.

Copperfest begins Friday with kickoff breakfast
Copperfest will be held Friday through Sunday at Ner-Park, on the corner of Arbutus Avenue and Madison Street, in Oconto. Featured events will be camel rides, a copper penny find, street market, trout pond, skateboard park and stage appearances by Grandpa Joe, Jim Lenz and Mike Gregory.

Marguerite Lonzo
Marguerite Lorraine Lonzo, 88, of Oconto Falls, passed away on Friday, May 30. The love of her life, Louis Lonzo, passed away in 1962 after only 11 years of marriage. She enjoyed embroidery work, gardening, cats and loving her grandchildren.

Janet Ann Haffeman
Janet Ann Haffeman, 75, Lena, passed away Monday, May 26, 2014, after a long illness, at Bay Area Medical Center, Marinette. She was born to the late Leo and Anna (Pivonka) Valenta on April 25, 1939. Janet married Melvin Haffeman on Nov. 30, 1957. She worked as a waitress at The Round Roof of Kelly Lake, at The Wooden Shoe of Lena for many years and retired from The Store in Lena due to health issues.
