The season opener was a short one for the Shawano Community High School boys soccer team, which fell behind 4-0 to nonconference foe Pulaski on Tuesday before a downpour ended the match at halftime. Shawano coach Bob Croschere said with the loss of 14 seniors from last year, the team must continue to grow as the season gets into full swing. “We have got to kind of come together as a team,” Croschere said.

Amateur divers Adian and Noah Stary were swimming and diving in the Oconto River at the wayside on state Highway 32 when they discovered a sign on the muddy river bottom. The sign had been attached to a stile over 37 years ago at the wayside park on County Road BB, Gillett. A stile is a set of steps going up and over a fence.

The Gillett Library will host an open house at the new Community Square, 204 E. Main St., from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21. A back-to-school fashion show, with Ashley Britton, National Junior Teen Miss, as master of ceremonies, is scheduled from 4-5 p.m., followed by Skate the Square from 5-7 p.m.

“Circle of Friends” is the theme of this year’s Friendship Sunday, to be celebrated at 9 a.m. Sunday, Aug.

A Gillett girl turned a heart-breaking incident at the 2013 Oconto County Fair into a heart-warming tale of generosity in 2014. Elizabeth Ciancio, 11, whose black and hot pink quilt was stolen at the 2013 fair, exhibited a black, pink and dark blue quilt to place on her bed and also sewed a patriotic quilt to be donated to a veteran. “I’m very proud of her for doing it again,” said her mother, Sarah Ciancio.

Wanda Katherine Rudie Jan. 11, 1963-Aug. 12, 2014 Wanda was born to Richard and Carol Nelson, attended Hayes Lutheran School, graduated from Gillett High School and became an Outstanding Graduate in 4-H. She went on to graduate from Northeast Wisconsin Technical College as a licensed practical nurse and concluded her career in insurance. Wanda married Todd R.

Arvilla Johnson, 97, Oconto Falls, died early Tuesday morning, Aug. 12, 2014, at Sharpe Care. She was born Sept. 7, 1916, in Mountain to Albert and Jessie (Hurning) Bartz. Arvilla grew up in the Mountain area, where she graduated high school with the Class of 1934. On Sept. 4, 1936, she married Bob Johnson in Oconto Falls. Arvilla lived in Oconto Falls for most of her life.

Alice E. Bowman, 101, Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014. She was born to the late John and Lily (Waltho) McAllan on Feb. 3, 1913. Alice McAllan married Bernard Bowman on Dec. 15, 1929, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lakewood. The couple lived all of their lives in the Mountain area, where they farmed and owned and operated a grocery store.

Madeline L. Milheiser, 91, Oconto Falls, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 12, 2014, at Sharpe Care Ltd. She was born Feb. 24, 1923, in Lena to Joseph and Amelia (Metzner) Beschta. Madeline grew up in the Lena area, where she graduated from Lena High School with the Class of 1941. On Sept. 13, 1947, she married Louis Milheiser in Lena.
