There are days when an old familiar song runs through a person’s head, even though the location in the lyrics is far from the path around the Falls. Such was the case Thursday. The song was “Last Train to Clarksville,” sung by The Monkees and released in August 1966, the month this observer entered college. The pop music culture was big with people of that age, and this particular song took off right from the start.

To the editor: Ad in the paper gave notice of price increases at the local hospital. Granted, price of things have gone up, and we thank them for subsidizing different government programs and charity care. If they’re having money problems, where did the money come from to give $75,000 for the softball fields instead of using it for hospital expenses? Also, another article about a $100,000 donation from ST Paper for the new stadium.

Recently, a lightbulb burned out in one of our lamps. It was an old incandescent bulb, one of the few that still remain in our house.

Seventh-grade students at Washington Middle School in Oconto Falls completed a community service project during the 2014-15 school year. Their goal was to install Little Free Libraries at various locations in the Oconto Falls School District. A Little Free Library is a “take a book, return a book” gathering place where community members can share their favorite literature and stories.

A successful collegiate volleyball career almost never started for 2012 Oconto Falls High School graduate Katelyn Malcheski. Oconto Falls High School senior pitcher Riley Greutzmacher and junior catcher Michael Manns were named to the All-Bay Conference second team announced last week. Senior shortstop Elizabeth Manns was also a second-team choice in softball. Greutzmacher struck out 58 hitters through 44 2/3 innings and allowed 11 earned runs on 35 hits to produce a stellar 1.74 ERA. He walked 11 hitters and accumulated a 5-3 record for the Panthers.

TRACK Christensen takes 14th in high jump Suring High School sophomore John Christensen took 14th among 18 high jumpers at the WIAA Division 3 state track meet Friday and Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Christensen’s best jump at state was 5 feet, 10 inches. He was added as a extra qualifier following his sectional performance in Rosholt, where he cleared 6-0 to place fifth.

Oconto Falls High School senior Jacob Stoinski advanced to the WIAA Division 2 state golf championship after taking third among 71 golfers June 2 at the Freedom Sectional. Marinette (326) won the sectional at Irish Waters Golf Course in Freedom, with Freedom (334) finishing second.
