Oconto County Board passes sheriff’s wellness program

The Oconto County Board approved a resolution April 15 to create an expanded wellness program in the sheriff’s department. Supervisors approved a $48,000 transfer from the county’s general fund to support a contract with an Oconto Falls company called Wellness Command Post, which provides 28 counselors trained in military and law enforcement counseling. Boardwalk to be built along Pine Lake
A 2,000-foot boardwalk near Pine Lake in the Town of Belle Plaine is in the works on land owned by the town. Town officials received approval from the Shawano County Board of Adjustment on April 10 to move forward with the proposal. School board purchases 33 acres of land
A special meeting of the Shawano School District electorate April 14 paved the way for the Shawano School Board to purchase 33.58 acres of land near Shawano Community High School that could be used in a few years as the new home for Shawano Community Middle School. Potato planting underway, 2% complete
Wisconsin had 3.3 days suitable for fieldwork statewide for the week ending April 13, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Northern Wisconsin still had some frost in the ground, and in areas, topsoil was too wet for fieldwork. Conditions in central and southern areas of the state allowed for spring tillage and early planting of some crops to begin.

DNR spring hearing in Shawano re-elects CDAC delegates
There were few fireworks or discussions April 14 during the Shawano County spring hearing hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and state Conservation Congress. A total of 13 people attended the annual hearing at Shawano Community Middle School, according to Duane Beyer of Shawano, who was re-elected to a two-year term as chairman of the county’s five-member Conservation Congress.

Oconto County jail OT way down
The Oconto County Jail has seen a dramatic decrease in corrections officers’ overtime over the past seven years, Sheriff Todd Skarban reported to the county board during its annual meeting April 15. In 2018, the jail reported 632 12-hour overtime shifts, and it was still at 467 OT shifts in 2019 when the department started to focus more attention on the issue, Skarban said. They got it down to 151 in 2022, 142 in 2022, 132 in 2023 and 131 in 2024

Bonduel loses to Southern Door
April 19 Southern Door 3, Bonduel 1 Southern Door traveled to Bonduel for a Saturday morning baseball game and came out on top by a 3-1 score. Drew Daoust was the winning pitcher for the Eagles, and Beckett Hartlaben took the loss for the Bears. Hartlaben doubled and Joe Felhofer, Cade Johnson and Mason Zuleger had singles for the Bears. Pulaski softball team loses DH
April 19 Green Bay Preble 9, Pulaski 0 Green Bay Preble 7, Pulaski 2 Pulaski’s softball bats were relatively quiet as the Red Raiders lost both ends of a doubleheader to Green Bay Preble. Pulaski was shut out 9-0 in the opener and fell 7-2 in the second game. Pulaski dropped to 2-4 in the Fox River Classic Conference and 4-4 overall.
