The Oconto Falls Friends of the Arts continue their 2015-2016 Fine Arts Series with a performance by the Wisconsin Singers at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct.

Louis Otto Winkler, 88, of the town of Underhill (Gillett), passed away on Monday, Oct. 19, 2015, at Atrium PAC of Evergreen in Shawano. The son of the late Otto and Clara (Schoenbeck) Winkler, Louie was born Dec. 19, 1926, in Gillett. He graduated from Gillett High School in 1944. He married Joanne Marie Dittman on Sept. 24, 1949, at Christ Lutheran Church in the town of Underhill. She preceded him in death on Dec. 4, 1991.

Levi Robert Oldham, 22, died unexpectedly due to a motorcycle accident on Oct. 14, 2015, the younger son of Robert and Vicky Oldham of rural Pound. Levi was born on Aug. 16, 1993.

Barb A. Nockerts, 73, Oconto Falls, found peace on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015. She was born to the late Clarence and Anna Beaumia on July 16, 1942. Barb married Edwin L. Nockerts, and the couple resided in Green Bay for many years until moving to Oconto Falls. Edwin preceded Barb in death. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, knitting, crafts and spending time with family, especially playing cards with her granddaughter. Barb was a member of St.

Glen John Fischer, 85, of Gillett, passed away on Sept. 24, 2015, at Kindred Hearts in Shawano. He was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Marshfield to the late John and Mary (Krohn) Fischer. He married Veronica Lucille Faucher on Aug. 5, 1950, in Marshfield. He moved to Milwaukee, where he operated Glen Fischer Roofing Company for many years. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church and the carpenters union.

Althea Gubbels was 57 years old when her co-workers at an Algoma factory noticed she was confused about the routine parts of her job. A day of medical tests revealed the devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease — like her father and grandfather before her — abruptly ending her career in December 1995 and turning her husband, Melvin, into her caregiver. In 1997, Melvin turned to Home Respite’s Caring Tree Adult Day Center for support.

Sarah Waara was named the Lena Lions’ Student of the Month for September at the club’s October meeting at McGuire’s Sports Bar and Restaurant. Glenn Magnin, Lena Lions president, presented her with a leatherette clipboard and a certificate. Waara, a senior at Lena High School, is the daughter of Ken and Gudrun Wondrash. She was honored based on her excellent scholastic record and her extracurricular activities.

Oconto Falls city officials balked at a request to insure the former Jefferson School property owned by a local historical organization but conceded to the possibility of moving a fence at the property. Dale Seeling, of the Oconto Falls Area Heritage Center, on Oct. 13 asked the City Council to provide liability insurance at the property, which was deeded to the history group last year by the school district.

The village of Suring will pin its hopes to a water filter manufactured in Italy as a possible solution to an ongoing problem with a local well. Dave Welsing and Gayle Lindenberg of Robert E. Lee & Associates engineering told the Village Board on Oct. 13 that Envirogen Technologies Inc., the well’s manufacturer, is investigating whether a new type of filter would be suitable for Suring.
