Along with watching pretty much all sports, my husband got me interested in the show “Mountain Men,” airing on the History Channel. We DVR it and watch as we relax after night barn chores. I put my book down, no matter how good it is, when this show starts. They showcase six guys from Montana, Alaska and North Carolina. They all are as tough as shoe leather, assertive, very earthly and use their God-given intelligence in a profound way.

Shawano Police Department Oct. 20 Police logged 26 incidents, including the following: Theft — A woman reported the theft of two prescription drug supplies from a residence in the 400 block of North Franklin Street. Truancy — Two incidents of student truancy were reported at Shawano Community High School, 220 County Road B. Shoplifting — A male shoplifting suspect was taken into custody at Charlie’s County Market, 521 S.

Stockbridge-Munsee has a new tribal president after councilwoman Shannon Holsey defeated incumbent Wally Miller in the Oct. 10 election. The council was sworn into office Friday. This is Holsey’s first term as an officer. Miller served one two-year term. Doug Huck was elected vice president, defeating incumbent Greg Miller. Huck was treasurer for two prior terms. He returns for a one-year stint as vice president.

Six up, six down. There couldn’t be a better start to a football season. Except, there are problems. They haven’t blown out anybody, for one thing.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, John Wayne Lesatz died after a six-month long, painful battle with leukemia, surrounded by his children. He was born in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on May 2, 1943. John attended Engadine High School, where he lettered in baseball all four years. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. John was a proud veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and an even prouder United States Marine.

LaVerna Splinter, 100, of Tilleda, died on Oct. 20, 2015. She was born in Bowler, the town of Almon, on Aug. 4, 1915, the daughter of the late Fred and Tillie (Nordwig) Kessen. She spent her early years in the Bowler area and attended the Bowler school and Shawano High School. LaVerna worked for several years at Carley’s Gamble store in Bowler until her marriage.

Kathy Lynn Janusiak, 63, of Bonduel, passed away on Oct. 19, 2015, at her home, with family by her side, after a courageous eight-month battle with cancer. Kathy was born on Oct, 17, 1952, to Trudy (Johnson) Poytinger and the late Bob Poytinger in Milwaukee. She was united in marriage to Scott Janusiak on Aug. 29, 1986, in Clearwater, Florida. Kathy had an appreciation for nature like no other.

Roger F. Olson, 91, Pulaski, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, with his family at his side. The son of Ervin and Selma (Leder) Olson was born on March 8, 1924, in the town of Maple Grove. Roger proudly served his country as a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1945-1947 during World War II, when he was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. On June 18, 1949, he married Hertha Busch at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bonduel.

Marcella F. “Sally” Palmer, 90, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at her home, joining her heavenly family. A memorial service for Sally Palmer will be held on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Peace United Church of Christ in Shawano. Visitation will take place from 9 a.m. until the hour of service.
