Probably the most commonly used — and, in my opinion, abused — exemption in our state’s Open Meetings Law is the one that lets governmental bodies meet behind closed doors “whenever competitive or bargaining reasons require a closed session.” The exemption, 19.85(1)(e) in Wisconsin state statutes, is used by all manner of public bodies, from city councils to school boards.

Division 1, Notre Dame Pulaski’s Brady Hayward qualified for the state golf meet as an individual after carding a 76 (tied for third best score) at Thornberry Creek in Hobart for the WIAA golf sectionals. Hayward led his team to a third-place finish with a 318, just three strokes behind Bay Port, which advanced to the state meet along with sectional champion De Pere. June 5 Wittenberg-Birnamwood 1, Bonduel 0 Bonduel traveled to Wittenberg for a regional championship game that ended up being an old-fashioned pitchers duel. Bonduel’s Cade Johnson and Witt-Birn’s Zander Barke each threw six shutout innings. In the seventh, Race Anvelink doubled to lead off the Bonduel half of the inning.

June 5 Sheboygan Falls 9, Shawano 1 Shawano’s soccer team watched their playoff chances slowly fall by the wayside as Sheboygan Falls worked its way to a 9-1 victory in a WIAA Division 3 regional game. Sheboygan Falls held a 5-1 lead after the first half and scored another four goals after the intermission. Shawano ended the regular season at 4-4-2 for firth place in the Bay Conference and 7-11-3 overall.

Shawano’s Ella Stuber has been selected by high school coaches to play in the North-South all-star softball game to be held in the Wisconsin Dells on June 17. She is going to pursue her softball career at UW-River Falls, with plans to major in speech pathology. She is the daughter of Jenny and Tony Stuber.

Peter Aiken “Pete” Nygaard, 81, passed away peacefully May 30, 2025. He was born Sept. 4, 1943, in New London to the late Lee and Doris (Haight) Nygaard. Pete, at the age of 17, entered into the United States Army and trained mainly as a sharpshooter while stationed in Germany. There he earned his GED and experienced many adventures.

June 4 Seymour 3, Shawano 1 Shawano lost 3-1 to Seymour in a WIAA Division 2 regional playoff game postponed one day due to rain. The Hawks, 13-9 overall, ended the season in third place in the Bay Conference with an 11-7 record. Bonduel 6, Coleman 2 Bonduel started its Division 3 regional game with back-to-back singles by Cade Johnson and Race Anvelink.
