While deputies, first responders and passersby were tending to the driver of a fatal crash on U.S. 41-141 on March 19, a second crash occurred at the scene, killing another driver. According to a news release from Oconto County Sheriff Todd Skarban, the emergency dispatch center received a call at 10:08 a.m.

A Keshena man convicted of stealing from the construction site for the future Menominee Indian High School was sentenced March 20 in federal court to 2½ years in prison, three years’ supervised release and restitution of $29,451. According to court documents, Merwin Wynos Jr., 35, entered the fenced construction site last September and used a Kubota utility vehicle at the site to drive through the locked gate.

The Oconto County family court commissioner and register in probate has been appointed as a Marinette County judge, effective this summer. Gov. Tony Evers announced March 21 his appointment of Peggy Miller to Marinette County Circuit Court Branch 1. The appointment will fill the vacancy being created by Judge Jane Sequin’s resignation, effective July 31.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School District provides elective options to its high school students through the Rural Virtual Academy, but with some students using the academy excessively, it has decided to put limits on how many courses students can take through the online service. The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board voted March 18 to limit students to two RVA courses per year in their junior and senior years.

Human skeletal remains discovered on the Menominee Indian Reservation on Oct. 30, 2023, have been identified as Dean A. Ford, the Menominee Tribal Police Department announced March 20. Ford, 31, was a descendant of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin.
