City tax rate may increase for 2025

The city of Shawano’s tax rate could be increasing for 2025, but officials are hoping to keep a 2% cost-of-living increase alive for employees while moving back to a health insurance plan set up by the state. The Shawano Common Council received a briefing Oct. 23 addressing the latest budget work, with City Administrator Eddie Sheppard reporting that a $70,000 budget deficit has been closed in the last month and the budget is balanced.
Renel declared to have mental illness
A report declaring that Aaron Renel is indeed suffering from mental illness was accepted by both sides during an Oct. 23 court hearing in Branch II of the Shawano County Courthouse. Now that leaves both sides to come up with a new recommendation for sentencing by Jan. 16.

LaVern ‘Hefty’ Mayer
LaVern “Lefty” Henry Mayer, 97, Oconto Falls, died Thursday morning, Oct. 24, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born Nov. 15, 1926, in the Town of Advance to Herman and Nora (Werner) Mayer. He grew up in Morgan and attended South Morgan School and graduated from Oconto Falls High School with the class of 1944. Following graduation, he worked in the family owned cheese factory with his father and also helped farmers.
Suspect arrested in fatal ATV crash
A Gillett man was arrested in Arkansas after allegedly fleeing the scene of a fatal ATV accident in Oconto County. Sheriff Todd Skarban said the Oconto County Emergency Dispatch Center received a call at about 7 p.m. Oct.
3 local teams advance in football playoffs
Oct. 25 Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy 24, Wausaukee 12 Max Peterson rushed for two touchdowns and Calvin Peters rushed for one score as Lena/St. Thomas Aquinas Academy defeated Wausaukee 24-12 in their Level 1 playoff game. Lena led 16-6 after the first quarter and added eight more in the second for a 24-6 halftime lead.
