Ida A. Fischer, 97, formerly of Cecil, passed away on Friday, July 26, 2013, in Appleton. Ida was born on May 20, 1916, to the late Edward and Natalie (Reindfleisch) Wilke in the town of Underhill. On Oct. 17, 1934, she married Carl Fischer.

At 2:42 am. July 28, a single-vehicle accident was reported on County Road T, south of Presbyterian Road, in the town of Townsend. A male driver from Lakewood had been traveling north, swerved from one side of the road to the other, left the road, traveled down a steep embankment and overturned. He suffered serious injuries and was transported to a medical facility. He was cited for driving too fast for conditions. At 12:16 p.m.

Corn is the most widely grown crop in Marinette and Oconto counties, being planted annually on approximately 110,000 acres. The 2013 acreage will probably be down a bit, as many parts of Oconto County had planting difficulties, creating a need for crop switches or prevented planting acres.

A resident on North Oakland Avenue on July 10 reported the theft of a pistol, its ammunition and a pair of binoculars, all valued at $920. A 45-year-old female was cited for disorderly conduct July 16 after an altercation with her husband at their residence on west Highland Drive. A 43-year-old women from Oconto Falls was referred to the district attorney’s office for charges of forgery and issuing worthless checks.

Proceedings from July 26 A jury trial will be held Sept. 26 for Craig A. Spice II, 31, Suring. He faces nine counts of repeated failure to pay child support between June 1, 2008, and Oct. 11, 2012, and a felony bail jumping charge, which occurred April 13. A new Snowbulance has been delivered to Mountain Ambulance Service (MAS). The Snowbulance can carry a patient and an EMT from an off-road accident to the ambulance. It’s fully enclosed and equipped with interior lights and a heater. The Snowbulance has an interchangeable base, with skis for winter months and wheels for the rest of the year, so it can be used year-round.

Top-notch teachers who travel the path around the Falls know one technique to get youngsters to read: provide them with high-interest reading materials. For girls, it may be one type of literature, and for boys, it may be something else. The Oconto Falls Friends of the Arts recently awarded four scholarships for excellence in the arts. Recipients of the $250 scholarships are Carissa Trepanier, choir; Jennifer Lyng, band; Quinn Bauer, drama; and Molly Carlson, art. Trepanier will study communications and religious studies at St. Norbert College in De Pere and participate in the college choral music program.

The great Hall of Famer Ted Williams wrote a book in 1968 called “Science of Batting.” Actually, it was “written” by a guy named John Underwood, but supposedly it was Ted Williams telling the story. In it he says, “Hitting a baseball … is the single most difficult thing to do in sport.” Ted Williams had a lifetime batting average of .291, even though he had one season in which he hit .400, the last person ever to do that.
