Jo Ann Louise (Jo) Teaford, 66, of North Port, Fla., passed away Saturday, July 20, 2013. She was born in Two Rivers on Oct. 19, 1946, to the late Raymond and Alvilda (O’Malley) Bertler and grew up in Manitowoc. Jo attended Holy Family College, graduating in 1968 with an undergraduate degree in home economics and then attended Ohio University, graduating in 1983 with a master’s degree in home economics.

The Shawano Salvation Army is in desperate need of funds to help area residents. President Stacey Cicero said the charity usually runs out of money after about 11 months of the fiscal year, but this year it ran out in nine months. “We’re out of money and it went really quick this year,” Cicero said. The group’s fiscal year is from Oct. 1 to Sept.

Margaret Ann Petit, 88, died peacefully on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Rennes Health Care Center of Appleton. She was born March 8, 1925, in the town of Belle Plaine to the late Michael and Anna (Dillenberg) Muraski. Margaret graduated from Shawano High School and on May 30, 1950, she married Vernon Petit in Shawano. Together, they moved to Kentucky, where they lived while Vernon served in the military.

Shawano County Sheriff Randy Wright is seeking permission to use $715,000 from the county’s general fund to build a new evidence storage facility. Wright took his case to the Public Property Committee, which voted unanimously Friday to pass it on to the Finance Committee without a recommendation. The Finance Committee’s next meeting is scheduled for Aug.

Clara June Downing Schmidt, 84, of Shawano, passed away Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at her home. Born on May 8, 1929, in Elton, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Alma (Fultz) Mauk. On April 17, 1948, she was united in marriage to Jack Downing in Mount Pleasant, Ind. The couple made their home and raised their family in Losantville, Ind., and later in Hagerstown, Ind.

A new roof for the Shawano County Courthouse is expected to be completed within the next three months. The Public Property Committee on Friday unanimously accepted the low bid from Felts Construction, based in Shawano. Felts bid $184,716, more than $80,000 below the $265,000 budgeted for the project. The decision was an easy one, as the only other bid came from Craft Inc., of Manitowoc.

He officially retired on July 1 of this year. He worked in the Department of Public Works as a truck driver.

To the editor: Referencing Ron Dahm’s letter to the editor of July 26 regarding the preservation of the Soo Line (Wisconsin and Northern) depot, Mr. Daum misses a number of salient facts that should be brought to the attention of the residents of Shawano County. The Wisconsin and Northern Railroad, which eventually connected Neenah to Argonne, was begun in 1906 and completed by 1920.
