Fire destroys Tigerton business

A roaring fire destroyed one business and left three families without a home in Tigerton the night of Aug. 16.

Tigerton firefighters were dispatched to The Crossroads Bar and Grill at 300 Cedar St. at about 6:31 p.m.

Upon arrival, fire crews encountered heavy smoke in the attic area. All individuals were safely evacuated prior to the department’s arrival, and no injuries were reported.

Director sees libraries as ‘heart and hub’ of community

Staci Rubenzer is home again.

Rubenzer grew up in Shawano and graduated from Shawano Community High School. Less than a month ago, she returned home as the director at the Shawano County Library system.

Hockey league gets extension for Crawford Center rental

The Shawano Hockey League finally has the two-year extension it’s been seeking for months.

The county’s public property committee reaffirmed an extension of the current three-year lease at its Aug. 14 meeting. The hockey league is about to enter the second year of that current lease for use of the Crawford Center.

• Dakota J. Herning, 26, New London, pleaded no contest Aug. 14 to three counts of misdemeanor bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of operating without a valid license. Two of the bail jumping counts were amended from felonies in a plea agreement. Judge Katherine Sloma levied fines and costs and sentenced him to 45 days in county jail.

• Eric J. Hujet, 47, Seymour, pleaded no contest June 4 to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated (fourth offense). Judge Jay Conley on Aug. 12 imposed and stayed a prison sentence, then placed Hujet on four years of probation with conditions including revocation of his driver’s license for 36 months.
