• Martin W.J. Penass, 37, Keshena, pleaded no contest Jan. 21 to two counts of felony bail jumping and two misdemeanor charges of operating a motor vehicle while his license was revoked. Judge Katherine Sloma levied fines and court costs and sentenced him to 90 days in county jail.

• Carla Ann Shafman, 32, Hancock, pleaded no contest Jan. 22 to child abuse recklessly causing harm. Judge Jay Conley approved a deferred judgment agreement withholding a guilty finding for 18 months if conditions are met.

Deputies responded to 48 incidents, including three traffic stops, three citizen assists, three miscellaneous traffic incidents, three welfare checks; two open-line 911 calls; 11 ambulance calls; three crashes, one involving deer.

Northeast Wisconsin Technical College is accepting applications for three positions on the NWTC district board of trustees.

The following categories will be filled with candidates living within the NWTC district:

• Elected official representative (one position): An individual who is elected to a national, state or local office. The elected official must remain in office for the duration of their appointment term.

Rights, freedoms and democracy are the stated cornerstones of Judge Chris Taylor’s bid for a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. And she touched on all those topics when she visited the Shawano Civic Center on Jan. 21 as a guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Shawano-Menominee Counties Democratic Party.

Paul Pionke, Shawano County’s veterans service officer, announced his retirement effective March 27.

Pionke, a 23-year veteran with the U.S. Air Force, has worked for the county since July 2022.

“Last year was a bad year for me with (my) legs,” he said. “I’m also going to spend more time being a husband, father and grandfather.”
