New middle school opens its doors in Oconto Falls

Students and their parents got their first look at the new Oconto Falls Middle School on Aug. 4, eager to see how the new place could enhance their education much more than the former Washington Middle School.

Voters in November 2022 approved a $37.6 million referendum that enabled the new school along with security upgrades and roof replacements at Oconto Falls High School and Oconto Falls and Abrams elementary schools.

Karcz farms to unite for common license

A pair of Karcz family farms are expected to merge for a common livestock facility license and then double the number of cows raised on the two homesteads.

That was the proposal put forth at a Shawano County Land Conservation Department public informational meeting held Aug. 4 in Pulaski.

Dispatch staffing improving

There might be a light at the end of the tunnel for the Shawano County Dispatch Center. At least a little light.

While there still remain four vacancies among 16 positions, Kasey Cross, communications supervisor, told the public safety committee Aug. 6 that a new dispatcher will start Aug. 11, training on the night shift.

Changes finally coming for ATV/UTV drivers on county roads

Drivers of ATVs and UTVs who use Shawano County roadways will soon have a new set of rules to follow.

After months of work, the highway and parks committee adopted the changes Aug. 5, and the public safety committee followed Aug. 6, with the county board expected to adopt the new ordinance Aug. 20.

Bahr plea on 100 charges delayed again

A difference of opinion on time to be served and an absent assistant district attorney delayed the plea and sentencing for Tracy Bahr, who currently has 100 charges levied against him in Shawano-Menominee County Circuit Court.

Utility helps school district study energy efficiency

The Oconto Falls School District has secured more than $8,200 in funding to optimize its building systems, an effort that is expected to reduce energy costs and waste.

The funding comes from WPPI Energy, the joint action agency for Oconto Falls Municipal Utilities (OFMU), through its energy saving programs for schools and governments.
