Gillett High School’s four-game winning streak ended June 4 with a 10-0 loss to Wausaukee in the first round of the WIAA Division 4 regionals.
Gillett (4-11, 2-10 Marinette & Oconto Conference) was unable to get the bats going in the shutout loss, producing two hits against Wausaukee pitcher Russell Smith. Smith struck out four batters in five innings before the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
Derek Zahn (1 for 2) was the sole Tigers runner to get beyond second base, advancing to third base in the fourth inning on a fielder’s choice by Mitchell Umentum.
Sophomore outfielder Benny Taylor, who started the season on the bench due to the Tigers’ eight seniors, got Gillett’s only other hit, a single, in the second inning. It was his sixth hit in the last five games.
“He didn’t play a lot early in the season, but his fielding and hitting got much better,” coach Pat Nelson said.
Bryce Cibulka took the loss for Gillett, allowing seven runs in three innings, before Derek Zahn relieved him to start the fourth inning.
Eric Fischer, the Tigers’ leading hitter in 2014, went 0 for 2 in the final game. Fischer had 16 hits, seven RBIs and four walks in 15 games. He collected three hits, including a double, in Gillett’s 10-2 first-round tourney win at White Lake.
“We started hitting the ball toward the end of the season,” Nelson said.
Zahn was the team’s leading pitcher, with 54 strikeouts through 39 innings. He allowed 43 hits and 18 walks. He struck out 11 batters in seven innings for the Tigers at White Lake.
The Rangers’ leading hitter, Zach Orlando, batted 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Leadoff hitter Eddy Self plated three times and batted 1 for 1 with three walks and two stolen bases.
