On a farm, there’s planting season, harvest season and fly season. Planting and harvesting are very productive and satisfying. Fly season is just plain annoying. Those pesky flies, and on some farms, a multitude of mosquitoes, have begun showing up in earnest.

The Shawano Community High School cross-country course is 3.1 miles. For about a dozen runners in the Shawano Run Club, the goal is to run the course more than 64 times this summer, getting into the elite 200-mile club. “It’s about getting miles underneath them so, when the (high school) season starts, they are in shape,” said Robert Buss, Shawano Run Club president. Most areas of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shawano are unrecognizable as it undergoes an extensive renovation. Work started on May 13 and is expected to be completed by Oct. 1. The renovation is being financed by $432,000 that was raised 10 years ago for the second phase of a reconfiguration of the church. “It was repurposed toward this simplified renovation,” said the Rev.

Nearly 60 seniors at Thursday’s eighth annual Senior Information Day were encouraged to combine social engagement and physical activity to promote better health. The event, held at the Shawano Civic Center, was a combined effort of the Aging Unit of the Shawano County Department of Social Services and Shawano Community Education. “We had a great turnout today,” said Holly Konitzer, social worker with the Aging Unit of Shawano County.

Asphalt repairs on Fifth Street are lingering, but, for the most part, major street reconstruction in Shawano has wrapped up for the year and has come in within budget, according to the Department of Public Works. “We’re very happy with the results,” Public Works Coordinator Eddie Sheppard said. The Shawano Common Council in March awarded this year’s street and utility reconstruction projects to DeGroot Inc., of Green Bay, on a bid of $966,975. S

Arlene M. Anderson, 82, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Thursday morning, July 17, 2014, at Birch Hill Care Center in Shawano. Arlene had been at Birch Hill rehabilitating from a recent injury. Leonard Holsey has been hired to coach the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School varsity football team this season, moving up after spending a season as an assistant coach under former coach Aaron Doll. Holsey, a Duke University graduate, played in the NFL for the New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, New England Patriots and Washington Redskins.
