From time to time, each one of us needs a helping hand. Along our road, we have wonderful neighbors. We all mind our own business, but if any one of us needs something, we can count on each other to help. After all, it’s the neighborly thing to do. One day when we were trying to button up our second crop hay, wouldn’t you know, our baler broke.

Jo Ann Schedler is helping with the 38th annual Mohican Veterans Pow-wow being held Aug. 8-10 in Bowler. Schedler was born in Shawano but grew up in Milwaukee, graduating from South Division High School.

Children’s musician Ken Lonnquist will headline Kids Day at the 36th annual Shawano Folk Music Festival. “He is one of Wisconsin’s finest and best-known children’s performers and he will be on hand all weekend, not just doing children’s music, but some adult performances, too,” said Dori Jerger, festival committee member. Smiling Otter Traders will return for the 26th year as a crafter at the 36th annual Shawano Folk Music Festival from Aug.

As the 2014 racing season reaches its final third of the schedule, it is a great time to take a look at some of the intriguing story lines right. One of the top point battles is in the IMCA Sport Mod class. Second-year racers Lucas Lamberies and Jordan Bartz have both continued to grow as racers following stellar rookie seasons. Each driver has scored two feature wins in track- point racing action. Lamberies holds a seven-point edge over Bartz.

Shawano sluggers Chase Henning and Alex Frechette will be heading to Fox Cities Stadium on Aug. 9 for the Fox River Valley American Legion All-Star game. The Fox River Valley stars are scheduled to play at noon.

The only clue that Isaiah Lanphear was in a major accident two months earlier was the cast where his hand should have been. Lanphear, a 5-year-old from Cecil who lost his hand in an accident last summer, was back to happily being a kid and playing football and other sports just two months after the incident thanks to a summer camp his grandparents, Joe and Lisa Lanphear, found.
