Charlene Rae Helms, 64, of Appleton, formerly of Shawano, died on Friday, Oct. 3, 2014, at her home. Born on May 2, 1950, in Clintonville, she was the daughter of the late Ned and Arlette (Sether) Nehring. Charlene was united in marriage to Harold Helms Jr. on Nov. 15, 1969, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Marion.

C.J. Doxtater, from End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will present the keynote address at a Domestic Violence Awareness Day program Wednesday at Menominee Casino Resort, N277 State Highway 47/55, Keshena. The program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 9 a.m.

Visitors enjoyed the art, and artists enjoyed the visitors at the fourth annual Miles of Art tour held throughout Shawano County on Saturday and Sunday. The event was co-founded by the late David Rand and his wife, Kazuko, to showcase a variety of visual and performing arts in area artists’ studios and homes, and to bring visitors to an area commonly known for its agriculture.

The season is almost over at St. James Retreat, and it is already heavily booked for next year. Don Baumgartner, president of the retreat organization, spends a lot of his time at the retreat checking the buildings and grounds. “I just like to get out here,” he said. On Oct. 23, 1954, the Men’s Club at St. James Lutheran Church in Shawano bought the 80 acres from the Wallrich Land & Lumber Company for $400.

To the editor: A special meeting of the Clintonville Common Council scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 17, was cancelled on Monday, Sept. 15. City Clerk Peggy Johnson told me that the three council members who requested the meeting had cancelled it. This was not the case. Now the question arises as to whom has the authority to cancel a legally called meeting.

To the editor: In a democracy, it is of utmost importance that the candidates and their followers give voters truthful campaign information to make choices. This sheriff’s campaign has turned into a lying, gossiping mess, about things that don’t matter. Shame on you who are playing dirty tricks. You are people who are destroying our democracy and country.

Cellcom will open its new retail store at 511 N. Main St. in Shawano on Monday. The store at 710 E. Green Bay St. will close at 4 p.m. Sunday. “Cellcom has been privileged to serve the Shawano area for over 20 years and we are excited to further invest in the community,” said Pat Riordan, president and CEO of Cellcom.
