Shawano police are warning that a scam originating in Milwaukee early this year is starting to show up in the Shawano area. The Wisconsin Better Business Bureau issued a warning to consumers in May to beware of scammers using the Green Dot MoneyPak prepaid cards to scam.

The Shawano Community High School volleyball team earned a No. 4 seed and will match up against area rival and No. 5 seed Clintonville to open the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament Tuesday in Shawano. The Hawks (2-6 Bay Conference) beat Clintonville (2-5 Eastern Valley) twice in the Shawano Invitational earlier this season. The winner of Tuesday’s match will face No. 1 Notre Dame, which will have a bye Tuesday.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School boys and girls teams won Central Wisconsin Conference cross-country championships Thursday at Weyauwega-Fremont High School. The Bonduel boys were third, led by senior Sam Falck’s second-place finish in 17:33. He was followed by Travis Wollenberg (7th, 18:27), Austin Marcks (8th, 18:33), Jake Moede (22nd, 19:41) and Austin Kurey (24th, 19:46). Hunter Kreger led Witt-Birn with a fifth-place finish in 17:53.

The Gresham/Bowler high school boys soccer team’s season came to an end Thursday with a 4-2 loss to Stevens Point Pacelli in the WIAA Division 4 regional final in Stevens Point. The Wildcats had trouble adjusting to playing a night game and could not overcome Pacelli’s first-half momentum. “The boys got caught a little off guard playing a night game,” Gresham/Bowler coach Nate Boucher said.

Jake Klister couldn’t help taking a peek. The Shawano Community High School senior was looking for Oconto Falls senior Mike Friedman as the two ran the last stretch of the Bay Conference boys varsity cross-country race Thursday. Tears come to the eyes of Julie Dallman, of Shawano, as she recounts getting the news six years ago that she had breast cancer. “I freaked out,” she said. She had a mammogram in April 2008 after forgetting about it the year before. Previously she had been getting mammograms every year. “They told me there was a suspicious spot,” she said. She had a biopsy and on May 7, 2008, it was confirmed as breast cancer.

Gordon Frederick Schumacher died in his home at the age of 90 on Sunday, Oct. 12. Gordon was born on Sept. 16, 1924, in Shawano, to Max and Linda Schumacher. He had one sister, Florence, who predeceased him in 2001, and many cousins. Gordon graduated from Shawano High School in 1942 and entered the Navy V-12 officers training program in July 1943. He was discharged from the Navy in July 1946 after serving as an ensign aboard the carrier U.S.S.
