Common Core foe brings message to Bonduel

An opponent of the new Common Core education standards is slated to speak at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Bonduel High School. Duke Pesta is an assistant professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and academic director of FreedomProject Education, which is an online school that offers a “Common Core-free education built on Judeo-Christian values.” Pesta has made more than 100 presentations on the Common Core standards.

Clintonville hires interim administrator
Charles Kell, of Little Chute, has been hired as interim city administrator in Clintonville. The Clintonville Common Council met in closed session Tuesday night and then voted 8-1 to hire Kell at $75 per hour as needed. He will not receive benefits. Kell had served as the village administrator in Little Chute but retired about a year and a half ago.
Thrivent Financial receives facade grant
Thrivent Financial Wolf River Associates has received a Shawano Country Vision 2017 facade improvement grant totaling $2,500. The grant was awarded to help cover costs to purchase and install signage at the Thrivent office at 310 E. Green Bay St.

Phyllis Ashenbrenner, 99, of Gresham, passed away on Oct. 16, 2014, in Shawano. Born on Nov. 8, 1914, in Leopolis, she was the daughter of the late John and Minnie (Aschenbrenner) Cerveny. On Feb. 4, 1931, she was united in marriage to Louis F. Ashenbrenner in Leopolis. Phyllis worked side by side with Louis on their farm in the Lyndhurst area until retirement in 1949, when they moved to Gresham. She then worked at the St.
