Snow lights up path to holiday memories

Whoever is singing, “Let it Snow,” please stop, at least for a while. As I write this, I haven’t even wrestled with that 10-ton turkey yet, but the snow keeps on coming. Of course, by the time you read this, the turkey and trimmings will be gone, except for leftovers probably in the freezer. At this point, I can’t remember this many snowfalls before December even arrives. I don’t mind snow, for the most part.
Cut your own tree at Shawano farm
Hanauer’s Tree Farms in the town of Richmond has been a family-owned business for 46 years and is holding its second straight Cut Your Own Christmas Tree weekend. The farm owned by Dan Hanauer Jr. and his mother, Veronica, began sales Friday which will run through Sunday. Additional dates are Dec. 6-7 and Dec. 13-14.
School Notes
Sacred Heart Catholic School Sacred Heart Catholic School is excited to announce our new Story Time that is open to everybody. We will have story time each week on Thursdays in our school library from 10:30-11 a.m. We welcome children of all ages. There will be books, songs and rhymes. We hope to see you there! On Monday, we had a guest walker Ms. Carolyn from the Humane Society. She challenged our students to match or beat her steps.

Willard H. Kumm
Willard H. Kumm, 88, of Bonduel, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014. Willard was born on Aug. 4, 1926, in the town of Washington to the late William F. and Emma (Milis) Kumm. He received his education at Lakeview Grade School and Shawano High School. Willard was united in marriage on March 18, 1950, to Doris Mae Naumann, who preceded him in death on March 28, 1996.
Mark J. Jahnke
Mark J. Jahnke, 58, of Oshkosh, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014, in Shawano. Mark was born on April 26, 1956, in Milwaukee to the late Eugene and Elaine (Jung) Jahnke. Mark was united in marriage to Kelly Owen in Shawano on Sept. 29, 1988. He was proud to have worked at Leach Company in Oshkosh for over 20 years. Mark was a lifetime member of the NRA and North American Hunting and Fishing clubs.
LoriLynn (Krausert) Buettner
LoriLynn (Krausert) Buettner, 48, of Shawano passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2014. She was born on Jan. 17, 1966, in Green Bay to Gerald Krausert and the late Lorraine (Chaudoir) Krausert. LoriLynn graduated from Green Bay West High School in 1984 and then went on to college where she received a bachelor of science degree, and in 1996, she earned her associate’s degree in nursing.
Nature center has busy December schedule
A Christmas open house headlines the activities at Navarino Nature Center in December. Here is a list of the programs planned during the holiday season at the center, W5646 Lindsten Road, Shiocton. • Julie Wilber will help participants paint a snowman design on a glass block from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 2. Cost for the class is $30 for NNC members and $35 for nonmembers; the cost includes all materials except brushes.
Poverty, mental health remain concerns among county residents
Earlier this week, the Shawano-Menominee Counties Health Department revealed its findings of two Community Health Improvement (CHIP) meetings held in September. Shawano County was ranked 60th among 72 counties in Wisconsin, while Menominee was last in the March release of the Wisconsin County Health Rankings.
Vickers walks different path in the woods
When not teaching philosophy to college students, writing fiction that includes his just-published eighth book or traveling abroad, Dennis Vickers has been known to take a walk in the woods. His rambles have become more than a pleasure walk.
