Shawano County Coroner Marcus “Mike” Jesse is calling it quits after 16 years. Jesse, 70, recently submitted a letter announcing his retirement, effective May 31, to Gov. Scott Walker’s office. County Board Chairman Jerry Erdmann shared Jesse’s plans at the County Board meeting Wednesday. Jesse ran unopposed last fall for a new four-year term. He was appointed to the position by Gov.

The Shawano County Board showed unanimous support Wednesday for a resolution opposing the part of Gov. Scott Walker’s proposed budget that would require counties, instead of municipalities, to handle property tax assessments. Walker’s biennial budget proposal would require the county to start the process next year and have it fully implemented in 2017.

Shawano’s newest police officer will be the first Native American member of the force in more than 10 years. Antonio Escalante, who joins the department Monday, has been with the Menominee Tribal Police Department for more than 17 years, most recently as a detective in the investigations bureau.

Menominee County again ranks as the least healthy county in the state, according to the sixth annual County Health Rankings released Wednesday by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute. Shawano County, which ranked 60th last year among Wisconsin’s 72 counties, moved up to 46th this year for health outcomes (length and quality of life).

Gillett Secondary School senior Akeem Bates propelled the Tigers to a fifth-place finish among 17 Division 3 schools Thursday at the Oshkosh High School Invitational on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. Bates won the long jump and triple jump for the Tigers in the indoor meet, which was won by Princeton/Green Lake.

Lena High School sophomore Hunter Borchert and Gillett Secondary School senior Danny Torres were named second-team All-Marinette and Oconto Conference last week. Borchert scored 20 or more points in five of 23 games for the Wildcats this season, including a season-high 25 points at Crivitz on Feb. 13, when he knocked down seven 3-pointers in the 81-67 loss. The sophomore also snagged a season-best 11 boards in a 50-39 win at Gillett on Jan.

A fifth-place finish in the 1,600-meter relay was the best the Oconto Falls High School track team could do Thursday at the 44th annual Oshkosh High School Invitational at the Kolf Center on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh campus. The Panthers placed 16th out of the 26 schools at the meet. Mike Friedman, Sam Fletcher, Aaron Kurth and Luke Vrooman comprised the relay team that finished fifth, about a minute out of fourth.
