“Ski-Hard Cafe” is the theme of the weekly shows for Shawano Ski Sharks’ 38th annual season, which is slated to open Wednesday at Wolf River Beach. The club’s 38th season will include weekly water ski shows on Wednesdays through Aug. 19, two Sunday performances (July 5 and July 12), two learn-to-ski days (June 19 and June 26) and two adaptive water ski exhibitions (June 26 and Aug.

When the Shawano Ski Sharks unveiled adaptive water skiing last year, no one knew it would become a widely recognized program. The Wisconsin Water Ski Federation over the winter selected the Sharks to help train other groups interested in adaptive skiing.

The Shawano County Historical Society is celebrating its 75th anniversary at Rhubarb Fest this year. The seventh annual festival, the society’s largest fundraiser, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Heritage Park on North Franklin Street. “There are so many people involved with this,” said society board member Jeanette Berkovitz, who is serving as grounds chairman for the fest.

Nate Palmer kept telling himself it could have been worse. Last summer, the Green Bay Packers’ second-year linebacker tore his medial collateral ligament in the preseason finale. When the Packers cut their roster to 53, they placed Palmer on season-ending injured reserve. Palmer missed most of his junior year at Simeon Career Academy (Illinois) High School because of a broken ankle, but that was nothing compared to this.

Freshman Maddy Pietz led the Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School girls track and field team to a sixth-place finish in the two-day WIAA Division 2 state championships that concluded Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Pietz’s two runner-up finishes accounted for 16 of the Chargers’ 24 points.

The Shawano Community High School boys track and field team qualified competitors for three events in the WIAA Division 1 state championships at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, though neither athlete advanced past the preliminary round. Senior Daniel Boivin qualified for the state meet, which concluded Saturday, in the pole vault and 300-meter hurdles, and senior Jake Klister qualified in the 800. Gresham-Bowler senior Drew Payne won the WIAA Division 3 long jump in the two-day state track and field meet that concluded Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Payne’s mark of 21 feet, 11.5 inches was one of just three jumps beyond the 21-foot threshold and earned 10 points for Gresham-Bowler in the team standings. The Panthers finished with 14 points, placing them in a five-team tie for 16th.

Clintonville’s Lucas Lamberies led every lap of the IMCA Sport Mod feature at Shawano Speedway on Saturday, earning his first win of the year. Prior to the feature win, Lamberies won the first of two heat races in the division, followed by Wyatt Block and Brianna Ambroziak. Tracy Wassenberg won the other heat race. Lamberies then led each lap to win the feature and gain on Wassenberg and Block in the division point standings.
