Construction starts for law enforcement center A new law enforcement center is under construction north of the courthouse in Oconto. Demolition of 14 properties occurred in the spring, and construction of the facility began in August and will last an estimated 18 months.

CRP enrollment now open
The enrollment period for the USDA’s Conservation Reserve Program began Dec. 1 and ends Feb. 26. December 2015 marks the 30th anniversary of CRP, a federally funded program that assists agricultural producers with the cost of restoring, enhancing and protecting certain grasses, shrubs and trees to improve water quality, prevent soil erosion and reduce loss of wildlife habitat. As of September 2015, 24.2 million acres were enrolled in CRP.

WRESTLING Gillett/Suring 42 Oconto 33 Mitch Umentum and Alex Zeitler each pinned their opponents in the first minute of their matches at Gillett’s Dec. 22 dual with Oconto. Brett Milhans, Tanner Rehn and Garrett Kohls also secured wins by pin. Sam Lemens and Dante Carlson won by forfeit.

Panthers fall in final match to Pirates
It all came down to the final two wrestlers of the night. The winner of the 138-pound match between Oconto Falls High School’s Noah Stary and Bay Port’s Brady Shulfer, both state ranked, would determine which team would take home the victory. Down by two points, Oconto Falls needed Stary to pull out a win. Shulfer, however, scored a 12-1 major decision to give Bay Port a 36-30 victory in nonconference action Dec.
