Jan. 25 Deputies responded to 36 incidents, including suspicious activity on East Frontage Road in the Town of Abrams, three traffic stops, five citizen assists, one miscellaneous traffic incident, three welfare checks; two 911 hangups and one open line; five crashes, four involving deer. Jan.

Shawano County Sheriff’s Department Jan. 28 Deputies responded to 21 incidents, including an alarm at Bowler School, 500 S. Almon St., Bowler; four 911 calls; three reckless driving incidents; one crash. Jan. 27 Deputies responded to 26 incidents, including a failure to report to jail at the Huber Work Release Center, 1240 Engel Drive, Shawano; assisting with a fire at Kersten Lumber, 295 U.S.

Promote Pulaski, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is hosting a live used instrument auction during Casimir Pulaski Days in Pulaski on March 9. This event will take place in conjunction with a concertina and accordion swap meet at Scolly’s Hometown Ballroom, 149 W. Pulaski St., Pulaski. The swap meet will be held from 2-5 p.m., with the instrument auction slated for 3:30 p.m. Inspection of the instruments starts at 2:30 p.m.

It used to be that one person in the family could work to put food on the table and a roof over the family’s head. Those days are long gone, however, and both parents have to work to afford mortgage payments, trips to the grocery store, electricity and more. With both parents working their tushies off, it often creates a conundrum when school is done for the day.

The vehicle replacement fund for Shawano County vehicles — with the exception of the highway and human services departments — is now stocked with $1.1 million. The Shawano County Executive Committee agreed Jan. 17 to use money from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) fund. Shawano County Board Chairman Tom Kautza announced the decision at the Jan.

Running through the list of open dates, I was pleased at how many were already taken. My heart, just before Christmas, was tender for those that didn’t have food, much less a home to serve it in. So I was checking for needs at our local homeless shelter, Shawano Area Matthew 25, based on the scripture in Matthew 25:40 “…whatever you do for the least of these…” They’re located at 105 E. Richmond St., Shawano, and open from November through April.

Carthage College Three local students have been named to the Carthage College fall 2023 dean’s list. Dean’s list honors are accorded to Carthage students who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average while carrying at least 12 letter-graded credits in a given semester. The Shawano Common Council gave its approval for the city to seek a grant that would help upgrade some of the railroad tracks in the community and hopefully improve commerce as well. Scott Kroening, public works director, told the council Jan. 24 the city has been setting aside $17,000 annually to keep up with maintenance of some of the tracks within the city limits, specifically the ones that intersect with industrial businesses.

John “J.P.” Paige, 33, Oconto Falls, died suddenly Sunday morning, Jan. 21, 2024, at home. He was born Jan. 8, 1991, at Landstuhl Army Hospital in Germany. Because of his mother’s career in the U.S. Air Force, John moved back to the U.S. at the age of 2 years to Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
