Marlis Richards, of Townsend, has been named the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 44 member of the year. Serving as vice president, she joined the auxiliary seven years ago after moving here from Illinois with her husband, George, who is now the American Legion Post 44 Commander. Richards is very active, enjoys the friendships she has made attending auxiliary monthly meeting, conferences, etc. Richards contributes to the auxiliary in many ways help

David Kerber, director at KerberRose S.C. in the Shawano office, received the 2024 Business and Management Award from the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants (WICPA) on May 9. The Business and Management Award recognizes an individual working in business and management.

Jan Ptacek and Lisa Sorlie were initiated into Delta Kappa Gamma Nu Chapter during its May meeting at Mathew’s Supper Club in Clintonville. Delta Kappa Gamma is an international society of key women educators. Nu Chapter includes educators from Shawano and Waupaca counties. Ptacek earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary and special education and a master’s degree in special education and reading from University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

On May 15, over 50 people met at the Lakewood Town Hall to share a meal and celebrate the formal introduction of Northwoods Community Assistance Coalition (NCAC). NCAC is a group of local volunteers and health care providers in Wabeno, Townsend, Lakewood, Mountain, Suring and White Lake with the goal of helping those in need.

Diggers Hotline has announced the impressive milestone of processing 25 million locate requests since being formed in 1976. This achievement, which occurred on May 20, shows the commitment Diggers Hotline has made through the years to help keep Wisconsin residents safe.

When people ask me what a major barrier is facing individual Wisconsin students today, I don’t have to think hard to come up with an answer — support for their mental health. On a visit last year to a school in southwest Wisconsin, several students told me their school is doing the best it can to support their mental health needs, but there just was not enough staff to go around.

The Wittenberg-Birnamwood School Board hired Maurer Roofing on May 20 to replace the roof at Wittenberg Elementary-Middle School this summer, but the actual cost is still up for debate. Maurer had the lowest bid out of three companies that vied for the project, wanting $79,720, with a roof product that would be guaranteed for 25 years.

May 20 Division 2 Amherst Regional Oconto Falls golfers placed third and advanced to sectionals, with Wittenberg-Birnamwood in seventh and Menominee Indian/Gresham in ninth at Glacier Woods Golf Course in Iola. Mosinee won the meet with a 318. Oconto Falls had a 349. Wittenberg-Birnamwood had a 367, and Menominee Indian/Gresham scored 495. The Panthers were led by Kadyn Riel’s 78.

May 20 WIAA Subsectionals All three Shawano doubles teams advanced to sectional play following the opening round of subsection action at Western Racquet and Fitness Club in Green Bay.
