Clintonville High School swimmer Gabrielle Goerlinger took eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle and 10th in the 100 backstroke at the WIAA Division 2 state meet Friday in Madison. Goerlinger, a junior, posted a time of 1 minute, 59.85 seconds in the freestyle. The event was won by Shorewood’s Kristin Malone, who came in 1:49.81. In the backstroke, Goerlinger swam a 1:01.28, the 10th-best time.

The Shawano Country Chamber of Commerce and Shawano County Economic Progress Inc. recently announced Shawano Country Vision 2017 facade improvement matching grant funds were used to help renovate the exterior of Gage’s Tire & Auto, 503 U.S. Highway 45 N., in Tigerton. The $2,500 grant paid for 50 percent of the project costs. Improvements included the installation of new signs, new windows, a new awning and a shingled roof over the entry.

The Shawano County Board is expected to discuss Wednesday whether it will approve an additional $14,000 to remodel the former Health Department offices in the courthouse basement into offices for Sheriff’s Department investigators and support staff. A request for $19,000 in additional funds went before the Finance Committee earlier this week.

Last month, Shawano police held a lockdown drill at Shawano Middle School. It was an in-service day and only staff were involved, a handful of whom were selected to play students locked down in a classroom. The scenario was one that has become all too familiar, echoing the real-life tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut less than a year ago.

A Coleman teen is accused of setting up a sexual rendezvous via the Internet with a 15-year-old boy in the town of Wescott. Ryan L. Zempel, 19, was charged Friday with using a computer to facilitate a sex crime. He could face a maximum 40 years in prison and $100,000 fine if convicted. According to the criminal complaint, Zempel was expecting to meet the boy at Shawano County Park about 8 p.m Thursday.

We took the For Sale sign down from in front of our house, as winter is coming and we don’t want to move in the snow. Next spring, we’ll try again. We love where we are, but then reality rings its bell and you know it’s time to go from a large, two-story house to a ground level house, with a smaller lawn and no outbuildings.

I have learned a few stress release tricks this week, nothing new, but it seems I have gone at them in a renewed energy. One is quilting, which at times can produce stress, but for the most part, I can relax and enjoy seeing fabric turn into a completed pattern. I let the future bride of the grandson who is getting married in January pick out both fabric and the pattern. She chose one that looked simple enough to put together.

Last week I mentioned I was having computer problems. That just added to the list of things that went haywire. Looking back, after all has been handled and checked off, I marvel at God’s timing. Continually in prayer about the issues this past week, a phrase kept coming to my mind: “This too shall pass.” Altogether I was without a computer for almost 10 days. It was rough.
