We took the For Sale sign down from in front of our house, as winter is coming and we don’t want to move in the snow. Next spring, we’ll try again. We love where we are, but then reality rings its bell and you know it’s time to go from a large, two-story house to a ground level house, with a smaller lawn and no outbuildings. Meanwhile, we’ll enjoy another country Christmas in our 1910 farmhouse.
On the subject of moving, we’re moving right into the holiday mode with our “Star Spangled Christmas,” which begins rehearsal this week. Mary-Beth Kuester and her sister, Kay Doran Kuester, have again put their heads together to create a family show of song and skits to present to our patrons from Dec. 5-8 at the Mielke Arts Center. Miriam Nelson is musical director and Debbie Welch is accompanist. As before, this production is free, with donations welcomed and needed to support our local animal shelters. The show times are 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. No reservations are needed, just bring your family and friends.
Turning to business matters for a moment, our Box in the Wood Theatre Guild held its annual meeting on Nov. 5, and elections were held for president and secretary. The president normally serves one term of two years, but can be elected for one additional term. Since I served two terms, my time was up. Mary Madsen was elected to succeed me as president, and I’m confident she will do a wonderful job. Amy Steenbock was elected to succeed Mary-Beth Kuester as secretary. The secretary also serves for two years. In November 2014 we will have elections for vice president and treasurer. The guild’s bylaws state that, unlike the president, who can serve only two terms, the other officers may serve as long as they are elected to the position.
Our 2014 schedule of guild productions is set. Our spring offering is “The Dixie Swim Club,” a comedy about five women who have been friends since being teammates on the swim club in high school,. We watch them grow older and get to share the funny and sad parts of their lives. Directed by Miriam Nelson, the show runs from April 25-27 and May 2-4. Auditions will take place at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6 and 1 p.m. Feb. 8 at the Mielke Arts Center.
The summer 2014 musical will be “Suessical the Musical” directed by Brandon Byng. Kids are a big part of this fun production, so we hope to see lots of them at the auditions. Audition dates will be announced in the spring.
Fall 2014 will have Mary Madsen directing “Rest Assured,” another comedy of a different nature. A father who is money hungry won’t let his daughter marry the man she loves because he’s poor. He gets his comeuppance in a ghostly manner, which makes for a hilarious play.
A Christmas play is being planned for 2014, but a definite selection has not been made at this time. Stay tuned!
